Ok, blue pipe that goes back towards the bulkhead is open ended (not connected to anything) but is pushing out exhaust gasses for whatever reason
the inlet pipe comming from the left leads to....
which is just above and to the left of the oil filter and under the air inlet manifold on the front of the engine.
So any ideas what it is, what it does and why there are exhaust gasses comming out of the blue outlet pipe?
-
it's connected to the block breather, is basicly the ventialtion for the for the engine block and f**ks off the blow by gasses,
it's proabaly some sort of oil catch tank or oil mist separator the idea beiing to seperat oil from the blow by gasses and reurun it to the motor and not drop it on the road

So the exhaust fume style vapour comming out is nothing to worry about? I have just never noticed before
Also does that mean that this tank may get full from time to time and should be emptied?

Just found this whilst doing a little research, made me laugh.

garage engineering ftw !!

Lol, so would it be a good idea to drain this? As far as I am aware it has never been done, thats if it even needs doing :undecided:
-
you can drain them but theres normally no need.. give it a go see whats inside??

Well im just thinking it may be pretty clogged up and not doing the job its meant to anymore as oily exhaust style fumes are simply been chucked straight out of the outlet pipe which I have never noticed before
-
If the bit with the finger pointing to it doesnt have a return to the block then its probably just emptying itself onto the road anyway. I would say buy a proper breather tank with a drain and fit that instead if you are worried about it. Id be more worried about the amount of oil comming from somewhere on the engeine personally lol.

Yer, I wouldnt worry about the engine oil. Shes like that
-
The fumes are supposed to be taken back into the engine via the induction system to be burned in the combustion cycle. Taking the breather fumes off to fresh air would help lower the emmissions for the MOT.
-
if you think it may be blocked then remove and give it a good ol clean.. just stick a jet wash through its inlet
-
it's a very common mod on tuned engines not to recirculat blow by back into the intake.
its done as std to reduce emissions vented by the engine as it'll reburn all the crap in the blow by but it gunks stuff up with sh!t, makes connections on boost hoses slippy so they pop off easyer and oil vapors encorage detonation, allong with if something goes wrong you cant have a huge surge of oil suddely dump itself in the intake
-
thats why on my 1.8t i fitted a catch can.. was much cleaner in the pipes and throttle body afterwards..

This is what came out... ewwww
