Title: dissapponting golf mpg
Post by: javsta on 02 March 2011, 22:29
As some of you maybe aware I indeed have an oil burner

I was lured into the acclaimed 74.3 mpg claimed figure I have stacked up about 4k miles now and I have been giving it the beans every now and then however when im not giving the beans and I am driving sensibly I am nowhere near the 74- mid 60s mark for that matter.

I spoke to VW who despite keeping the car for four days and driving it around said in my urban cycle I was getting sub 20's and combined I was getting 40-45...they clearly new there was something wrong but told me to go away and keep a diary. she actually had a bulletin and a some notes on her screen but shyed away from reading from it as my car was performing so badly and just said the " she was referring to a different car, and fuel prices have gone up thats why mpg is low"

Silly women didnt understand the fact my dispute was on cars performance and nt the fuel price.

I feel as though Ive been conned by VW....does anyone else share my concern or is having similar probs...I should have got a bleeding tsi or a gtd at least I would have one or another rather than lack of both.

few rattles here and there and mpg is the only worries other than that its a sharp motor but its the little things that make the big things count.

Sub 20's urban  thats terrible mate, my GTI does high 20's round town no problem!
Most cars won't get near the quoted figures as it's all done in a "controlled environment" not the real world but thats rediculous!

Drive it on the motorway at 60mph just tickling the throttle if it needs it and you might get the claimed 74mpg. Otherwise its just another underpowered overweight car with the wrong gearing for use in the city (I assume it's the 1.6 Bluemotion?)

If I hoof my GTD I still get in the 30's

What engine do you have?

I am getting an average of around 45 on real world town/rush hour driving and can get 55 on a motorway cruise so it does sound as though there may be an issue with your car in some respect.

70+ is pipe dream territory but you should be looking at 50 which is not bad at all IMHO

My 2009 2.0TDI 110 can easily average 68mpg driving steady, 2nd consumption shows and average of 56.2 so I'd say yours must have an issue, or as posted, it is a heavy car.

Some may re call my comments about this engine being very un economical in the real world. The car is gutless and as result you use more of the throttle than you would in a 2.0 (110/140/170) as a result is dreadful on fuel. In one of those 1.6 tdi's 50mpg is a good result. Shame your salesman wasn't honest : (

Bluemotion also has a dpf doesn't it? Or do all the mk6 dervs have dpfs?
That never helped with consumption in my Leon fr :(

Thought my 53 was bad for 78-80 mpg on the MDF. I took the GT140-170 with BF on the M80 the new stretch speed limit 40 so set the cruise at 42 and was getting over 100mpg along a 4 mile stretch.... Blue motion ha what about red motion...

The fuel consumption figure is a test to let you compare this car with other cars that had to go through the same test. It does not tell you what you'll get in real life because there are tens of factors that will influence "real life" driving. Tyre pressure, outside temp, weight, etc. Plus the driving style of course.
You may think it is a con but it's in your interest to have good official fuel cons figures and lower real life cons then the other way round. VED is based on CO2 after all.

On the other hand if you were led to believe by the salesman that the car will always or easily perform 74mpg than that was a con and you have grounds for complaint.

^ What he said but also never trust any quoted figures.

IMO it is far better to read magazine reviews and look at their figures they got as there much more real world.

My own fuel figures i would also only ever go by brim to brim of the fuel tank figures not what the MFA says. As i can get real low figures and real high figures watching the MFA but my average to a tank over the past year has veried very little.
Basically fill the tank till the pump cuts off. Reset your trip meter. Then drive as you would normally till the tank is more or less empty then go fill back up till the pump cuts off. This tells you the amount of fuel in LTRs you have used and the Trip shows you how many miles you have done to those Ltrs. Convert Ltrs to gallons using an online conversion and work out your true average MPG figure to a tank.

I would be supprised if you get much more than 60mpg average unless your driving like miss daisy on a clear motorway for the entire full tank of fuel.

Convert Ltrs to gallons using an online conversion.
Just multiply the litres by 0.22 to convert to gallons.

your car is f**ked

we have a 2.0 TDI A3, and a 2.0 TDI mk5  both of them are much better on juice than that even when been booted,  i can get more than 20 mpg pooteling around in a f**ked old 300tdi disco
