Just about to buy my first Golf, well first Volkswagon actually.
it's a 1986, with one owner from new. It has full service history and is immaculate(well apart from the odd scratch.
It still has the original Blaupunkt stereo and exhaust.
The mileage is 96k and it's been garaged every night as well as having 2 valets per year. the guy who's selling is 78 and wants a smaller VW with power steering.
I've knocked him down to ?1200, is this a fair price? Can somebody let me know ASAP, as I'm going to get it on Saturday (12/03)
Cheers

could be cheaper!
-
OK, how much cheaper then?
-
You haven't mentioned what model the golf is and this will affect the price a great deal.
Also is it an 1986 on a C or a D plate?
I assume you are talking about an 8v gti in which case if it's in the condition you describe I would say the price varies from about ?700 upto what you have offered again depending on what reg it's on and it being really immaculate.
If it's not a gti then prices could range from about ?250 to ?500 depending on the model.
Also how much mot etc does it have left. What colour etc? this all affects value.

if its immaculate id wave 900 notes cash in front of his face.........if it had done say 60k id only offer him a grand max. presuming it is an 8v.
mine had 2 owners,FSH,102k,no rust or scratches and i paid 500 but it sounds like a good buy mate.
just get the price down!!!!

It's a C Reg GTi 8v, 2 door in black. He's already knocked it down by ?300 so I expect he was asking for over the odds in the first place (what do I know). Anyway, I'll try to get him down a bit more, if he won't budge then I'm still going ahead as it just looks great.
-
Black and 3door both go in the cars favour, in fact I don't think they even made a 5door gti on a c plate. At the end of the day the car is worth what you are happy to pay for it so go for it and enjoy. I don't suppose there are many gti's of that age that have only had one mature owner. It would probably be hard to find one that had had an easier life (e.g. not thrashed and probably not crashed).
-
hmm i wouldnt pay that much for it.
you'd get a late spec big bumper 8v for that money if your willing to look around, with the same mileage and condition
-
Thing is I don't have the time to look around, the MOT is nearly due on my Mk1 MR2 and I want to get it sold of off the road ASAP.
I'm new to the GTi game, but for some reason I'm not that fussed about the big bumper version, this one has more of a quirky look to it and that's what I'm after.
I'm going to shove ?1000 in his hand and see what he says.
-
wave it in front of his face etc, and tell him to look around at the price of others!
if he says no then just leave him your number and say the offer stands!!
-
I agree and I think he'll take the cash, the thing is (and I know this sounds soft) the guy is 78, he's not even asked for a deposit off me, he just taken me on my word. I know at the end of the day I should be after the best deal etc.
He's got his new car waiting at the garage, so he needs his garage empty, he's told them to get it ready as I've agreed to buy the car, so I'm in pretty good position to get the price lowered.
-
well keep us posted on how you get on
-
yeah, keep us posted!! and it sounds in mint condition from what you have said, but i reckon you makbe able to get the grand for it
-
Sounds a great car, where did you find it ? Personally I would n't risk loosing it for ?200.
-

good advice mate
-
(maybe this post is a little late but anyway...)
From another perspective - If its absolutley mint condition and you really want it go for it. But hopefully you did try and knock him down a bit.
-
If you love it - buy it! Good luck
-
If you are prepared to pay that price for it and it's as good as you say it is then go for it, at the end of the day anything is worth as much as someone is prepared to pay for it and if you are happy with whatever price you do pay for it then everyone's happy. Good luck.

Hi all and thanks for the replies. I called the fella on Fri evening and said I was still interested but have seen other examples for less so i was prepared to pay ?1000 and he accepted!
I picked it up on Sat and the guy wasn't happy about me ringing him up at the last minute and changing the price, as he 'd had 5 other offers in the week and had declined them all.
Anyway, it's mine now with a full tank of gas and a new stereo. I've had a good look at the paperwork and it has all the stamps in the book up until 2003, it even has his first insurance policy in the glovebox from 1985!!

sweet! get the pics up of it!!
