Title: fault on 98 8v gti

hi im new here and just bought a 98 mk3 20l 8v gti the problem im having is the car seems to stutter at about 4000 rpm and wont rev past 5000rpm its like its hitting the rev limiter also today when i came to start it after work it really strugeld to start and flashed up 10 02 on the dash where the mileometer is any help with this would be great thanks dave

Sounds like hall distributer/hall sender mate do a search there's plenty of info on here. The numbers on the dash I think are service inspection codes

Crank/cam and ignition timing need to be checked.

As said above IN02 is just the service indicator - there is a guide on here somewhere on how to reset it.

The first step would be to check your timing, if that is fine get it scanned with a VAGCOM to see if there are any fault codes.

When I had this problem with mine it was due to a faulty hall sensor on the side of the distributor :smiley:

As Dom said it is in safe mode so timing but a scan should show any fault codes.

I had the same problem, as the lads have said check the timming. Mine turned out to be the hall sender in the dizzzy i took a chance and brought a second hand one from Ebay as the hall sender is quite difficult to change. fitted it and i no longer have any problems all sorted. :smiley:
