Mot failed due to linkage defective.
I replaced the unit last year as it failed due leakage. The linkage was ok then! I took it to a different garage though this year.
Anyway..... how should this be correctly set up? Haynes has no info of any use. When I replaced the unit I just adjusted the new unit to have the same movement as the old one but Mr mot obviously thinks this is wrong. He said it was incorrectly setup.
How much movement should the valve have? Also how loose should the spring be when the car is on the ground level? I compared mine to a mates and he had about 5-10mm movement on the beam so I did the same on mine.
Any light shed on this would be great as I've got the retest tomorrow.
It's 91 8v gti

i set it so when car is on level ground the slack is just taken out of the spring. sailed thru every mot test since :)
the 100% proper way to do it is with a set of pressure gauges, which not everyone has to hand

That makes sense which is how it was setup to start with! I think the tester is a mong. I've copied how my mates is setup on his driver and the spring seems to loose. You would need a right fat pair in the back seats for it to be effective. I'll adjust it back and argue the toss with him. At the end of the day it only takes 30 seconds to adjust ay.

Nice to know its sorted... a lot of people overlook the adjustment of these when they lower their car.
