Title: Going to buy a mk3
Post by: JonoVDub on 01 March 2011, 11:21
Hey guys I'm looking at buying a 8v gti this weekend. Few questions it has a full mot  but no service history. Also registered car c due to damaged drivers rear panel. Also has a squeak on steering wheel. It's going for £500 from a dealer I'm not mechanical minded but have worked on a ship   what might the squeak be and cost to fix?

You should be fine with a Mk3 then! As you know it has been in an accident check all the panel gaps to make sure it should be on the road.

check with your insurers as some may not cover/ask more for a cat c

What year is it, £500 seems steep for a cat c mk3.

1997 r reg, only thing that worries me is the squeaking wheel

1997 r reg, only thing that worries me is the squeaking wheel

Is it the steering wheel itself or could it it be your PAS belt?

Post by: VR6_Wherry on 01 March 2011, 12:45
Don't worry too much about it being a Cat C my VR6 is a Cat C with no service history and we don't have MOTs! Took it to Portsmouth on the rollers and got 187.5bhp was told it was running perfectly!

Is it coming from the wheel itself? On my old 8v it started to squeek after i got it back from having the ignition switch changed then it stopped after about a week!

I would also try and bring the price down!

Steering wheel itself it was up for £600 I've got him down to £500 im test driving it this sat hopefully

If it is squeeking from the steering column then it could be a dry top bearing, better to replace the column if it is that.

Cost to replace that roughly? If it was

Have a look in here for common problems associated with mk3's. http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=57.0 There are a few, but most are relatively inexpensive to sort provided you do it yourself. Almost guarantee that someone on here will have experienced any problems you may have, and be able to point you in the right direction. Also lots of guides with pictures if you do a search to help you out. Trust me if you do go ahead and buy it, this forum will be invaluable! Very helpful and accommodating people.

I can see that already  I just hope he doesn't sell it before Saturday it looks tidy not a 16v but beggars can't be choosers in this climate :(

Personally I wouldnt buy a damaged car or if I was going to I would want to see the damage so I know whats needed to put it right. Why buy a damaged mk3 that you dont know to much about of a trader who probably gave £200 for it if that.If your on that kind of budget £500 just have a good look around I would rather buy a straight one thats got some kind of history and not had a smack up the rear end just my view.

Not much with a s/h column but you will need to play around with keys if it is a later car.

Yep bang on £500 would buy a undamaged car.

Ye I've been looking for a while and im finding more £800 for a 8v and £1000 for a 16v I'm not that competent with cars but my old man is so wouldn't be much of an issue would just be down to judgement I think. Seems more like a library her anyway than a forum loads of information

There was a nice 16v on ebay last week with 12 months mot and 6 months tax that sold for £350! They are very cheap at the minute so make sure it is well repaired and in top nick all over if paying £500. Whats the mileage on it?

Heres another - just to give you some idea of what is available.

It's done 124k miles
Title: Re: Going to buy a mk3
Post by: tdi_blu on 01 March 2011, 15:57
124k on a mk3 golf is nothing mate if you know anything about vws milage isnt really an issue if the cars got some form of history if anything 100k I would say most older vws are just worn in..

Post by: thai-wronghorse on 01 March 2011, 16:10
I would not be buying a crash damaged 8v with no history for £500. As mentioned, there are always mk3's of all types and models on ebay and in the classified section on here for around that price or less that would be better.

Infact i was watching 2 16v's and 1 8v on ebay over the past few days thst were local to myself and all three went for around £400ish.
Title: Re: Going to buy a mk3

sounds over priced for a mk3 with that milage and a cat c u could surley get one else werere for that price
Title: Re: Going to buy a mk3

Hum sound advice I can afford more than £500 I just assumed that was cheap I guess eBay is the way forward or classifieds here I will get my barge!

As stated already by everyone else already it's a buyers market at the moment, especially when it comes to mk3's. I wouldn't touch it personally :undecided:
Title: Re: Going to buy a mk3
Post by: Jimmy Filth on 01 March 2011, 17:03
I'd say £500 would be what you'd expect to pay for a mk3 8v in really good nick.  I can't see that a cat C mk3 8v would be worth it any price due to the current prices of decent cars...
Title: Re: Going to buy a mk3
Post by: Seanl on 01 March 2011, 18:24
Its simply the fact its a trade seller. If you were buying private, you would probably pay half that!

Exactly, there is alot of people that dont investigate current values and just believe that a car is worth whatever its priced up as.

Title: Re: Going to buy a mk3

I will, but unfortunately I am in another country.  You'll have to send a cheque for £9,000,000 with a stamped addressed envelope.  I'll then cash the cheque, draw out the change and put that, and the car in the envelope and send it to you
Title: Re: Going to buy a mk3

I never specified envelope size

If I was you mate, I'd push the cash up to a £1000 and go for a 16v

If I'm not mistaken, that shouldn't have a black bumper.  I'd ask the seller just incase it's had a front end knock...

I'd put money on that not being an Anni and also not a 16v!

If it is, it has none of the following...

Anniversary wheels, side trim, seats, seatbelts, gear and handbrake gaitor or steering wheel.. everything that made the Anni..

Also the clocks only go up to 140! onthe 16v and Vr6 they go up to 160!!

I would stay clear of that...
Title: Re: Going to buy a mk3

Thats not a anni to much missing unless its been stolen recovered and striped which is unlikely just sounds like a trader who dont know jack about mk3s.I had a chap try to tell me his mk3 VR6 was a highline in dragon green with cloth trim.

This one looks tidy £1400 a little steep but people do start off high and usually come down

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2536190.htm

Heres a little 8v aswell looks decent enough nice wheels seats etc.

Keep looking.

I got an 8v GTI on the R plate with tax and ticket for £427.

All it needed was some door trim and new vacuum hoses and was good as new.

You will be able to get something decent for £500 without worries.

Take a look at my opening thread to see what I picked up for that cash.

Not a big fan on the bright leather door trims and gator some decent bargain ones around though so

I wasn't a fan when I first saw, but the yellow and blue ones I have fallen for.  I suspect they may hold their value a bit better than a normal 8v...

That gaitors should't be red...they should be black with red stitching..same with the steering wheel.

Should have the following:
Red bumper strips
Red Seat belts
Red and black chequered GTi seats
Black with red stiching gaitors and steering wheel
Anni mats?
BBS RXII
