Post by: eyeletboy on 09 March 2005, 22:26
i'm looking at lowering my sportline but can't seem to make up my mind on which suspension is the best to fit.i want it quite low but i don't want the tyres and arch to rub.been told that coilovers are one of the best?any idea's and help would be really helpful.

best speak to Ads about that, but with all coilovers you can raise and lower to whatever height you want. the more expensive have damping adjustment to make the ride harsh, but at least it won't rub

eyelet, I got the streetline kit from ECP for ?135 (if you remember), this included springs and bilstein shocks, the drop is about 30 - 40mm and there is no rubbing and plenty of space in the arches but I'm running tyres of 185, 55, 15s. When I looked into this I had loads of options and people offer different opinions, but it's down to how much you want to spend in the end. In my opinion, ?600+ worth of suspension on my car that is not going to see a track was not worth the expense. Do you want the suspension to be for the look, the sportiness, the ride etc, I guess you need to ask yourself why you want to lower it and then look into the prices, do you want slightly lower, or snake low ? For me personally, I wanted to lower the car slightly for the look, make it a bit better around the corners but still have a comfortable ride and the sportline kit has given me all this for ?235 (?135 for kit and ?80 fitting).?

You asked ages ago for some pics of my car and I've taken some before and after photos and I can't get the baskets onto my laptop at the moment. If I manage to do this I will post them up for you.? ?

cheers gibby mate.in reality i just want to lower the car just for the look and not really for the performance as i don't hammer the car.i like the look on ad's sportline but i think that would be a little to low for mine as i have not got the fat wheels and it would look a little out of sorts.if you post those pics that would be really helpful so i could see the gap between the arches.

I would say go for Supersport Goldline coilovers. ride is kind of firm/harsh. its a quality coilover at about 340 quid

What Blue says sounds like a good compromise but remember, unless you are doing them yourself you'll have to pay for fitting on top of that. I'll try and get the pics out of the camera this weekend for you.

I've been quoted ?300 for a full refurb and polish so not a bad price at all. What size tyres are you running ?

195/45/15 avon z3's. there's a guy i have got to know quite well from swansea that does them.he does them in his own garage and all by hand.i seen some of the wheels waiting to be sent out to customers today and they look like new.i'm bit of a perfectionist and to be honest they look like new when he finished with them.i was quoted ?600 by a feller in bridgend nrcardiff.

You might need to be careful that you don't rub the arches if you go lower with 195s. I'm not really up on the tyre sizes and rubbing sizes, but maybe someone else might know. Mine are only 185, 55, 15s and there's plenty of space in the arches.

i'll have a chat with my local vw specialist and see what he has to say.they are quite up with all this sort of things. Also the guy that's doing my wheels also has a cab that's lowered quite a lot so he should be able to help me also with a bit of luck.

I ride mine on a Koni adjustable sport kit mixed with Eiback antiroll bars + poly bushes,

100% better than stock parts if you dont mind the slightly bumpier ride.

Performance comes at a cost, not just cash but comfort!

Stuff being comfy the rush is where its at!

Gix, what springs are you using, the ones that came with the kit, or some Eibachs, as I've heard that the Eibachs are more-or-less the same as standard, just 25-30mm lower.
