Title: MK3 RESTORATION ***NEW WHEELS***
Post by: TORNADO-GTi on 28 February 2011, 21:37
I bought my 1992  mk3 GTi (134,000 MILES) about a month ago for £490 with the plan to restore it to as close to new as possible on a budget.

changed oil, filters and front bumper this weekend and added yellow fogs just got to wire them up as the loom only arrived today. also got to fit  new aerial as it has been snapped off at some point in its life and new front carpet to replace original which has a hole in it near the clutch pedal. i have also ordered some colour coded mirrors. i'm going to do a full respray when the weather gets a bit warmer.

TT looks nice, others are a bit marmite IMO.

Mk3 looks clean, not sure on the yellow fogs if your going for original but will be interesting to see how it comes out :)

Yeah, not sure about what you mean by standard. Those BBS weren't standard on anything other than a VR6.

Yeah, not sure about what you mean by standard. Those BBS weren't standard on anything other than a VR6.

And only the later ones, 1996 onwards I believe, early ones had different BBS alloys.

What did you use to polish it?
I used a 320 grit sanding disc the various wet and dry paper up to a 3000 grit, it could do with being a bit shinier so might get a metal polishing kit.

Get a new expansion tank! Everyone misses it out with rebuilds, and it makes a massive difference to cleanliness of the whole bay.

Fitted the exhaust which was said to have previously been fitted to a mk3 but i don't think it had, as i had to get the hanger welded in a totally different place. Then finished off the undersealing, painted the gearbox, and suspension.

Well it's passed it's MOT after failing on a leaking brake pipe and seized n/s rear caliper. fitted new pipe and managed to free off caliper enough to pass but had to buy a new one as it stuck again on way back from test. It's also got a nice new shiny windscreen and i wired up the stereo, so all that's left to do is to fit and paint the caliper then get it taxed next month and it is back on the road after about 7 months off

Nice one mate well done!! Just for my reference what kind of gearbox oil do you use and do you just fill it until it starts coming out the hole. Lost a bit of mine when removing it!!

Not sure what oil it was as it was what they use in the garage, I did add some Forte gear oil treatment to it and the gears are so smooth now. I just filled it until it reached the top.
