Title: high speed wind noise!
Post by: joff GTI on 27 February 2011, 20:31
when i go above 80mph wind starts making a noise on my door seals & is really f**king annoying, a mate told me you can try bending in the tops of your doors by hand , but i really don`t fancy doing that , cracking paint etc.. would fitting new seals work? any advice would be grateful

I was trying to find out how bad it sounded at 100 compared to 80?

haha i was waiting for someone to say that.. not sure but when you  pull the doors towards you with the handles , the noise stops , then obviously starts again when you let go! so any ideas!?   just the same at 100 as 80 mate...

My guess would be the door seal, but that would just be a guess!

BTW where abouts in Cockermouth do you live?

Drop the glass down, place a piece of wood between door and frame and carefully bend it in a little, don't go mad, try and see how you get on.

This is one of those little jobs i still need to get around to doing and was reminded of this afternoon whilst screaming up the M20. i think Il have a tinkler with the door closers first though before brutally tweaking anything.

Have you had your car long? Don't think i've seen it around, they Mk4 wheels on it? They look good

I noticed a dragon green one knocking about last summer but that had bbs wheels I think. I've got no experience changing rocker gaskets otherwise i'd offer to pop over and help!

My last car, a 1.4 CL, did it at 80. Basically sounded like the door vibrating. mind you it was hard pressed to do 80, let alone anything more
Pulling the top of the door in by hand stopped the noise.

Current car is a 16v GTI fine at all speeds, though the wipers kinda jump a bit at very high speed, as if somebodys pulling them up. Also very ineffective at 85+, maybe thats what a wiper spoiler is for!

8V or 16V? 8V is really easy, 16V not so easy.

Theres a couple of nuts that are really tricky to get to on the 8v, especially for begginers...

I had the same thing on my car and did try bending door frame with no change.
So I bought a new door surround rubber and all became quiet!

bought it a couple of years back , yeah it had bbs anni split rims but they were hard work keeping clean & fancied a more modern look , & the montreals were cheap & suit the car well , had a black mk4 1.8t anni for 6months last year , but had to sell it to put money down on the house! so i bought the 16v back of my mate who i`d sold it to..
