Title: Mk2 Golf Driver

Ive been offered a nice Mk2 Golf Driver by one of my neighbours (I currently have a Mk3 Cabriolet plus others) and I wondered what the general consensus was?

Are they just an underpowered GTI pretender or a secret gem?

This particular one is in fantastic condition and been garaged since new!

Id love to hear your opinions or experiences with the Mk2 Driver

Not a bad choice but budget for a webber carb replacment as the pierberg gives lots of problems.

That sounds familiar....I had to do that on my E30 too!

Are the trim levels on the driver the same as the GTI?

Not 100% sure but I think the GTI is better spec.

If the body is in great conditon then get it.  Easy to do an engine upgrade to GTI standard and above.

Is it a good price? Sounds brilliant to me, will just have to put a new engine in it to make it fast.

driver has same external trim as pre-90 GTI, interior is poverty spec though with flat seats and often no rev counter. grey carpets on most of them too and ugly trim colours. but all that is easily solved by fitting gti stuff :)

if its been well looked after chances are the pierburg 2e2 carb may be in good nick, if not you can either webber it as above or try to fix it as per my 2e2 repair guide.  1.6 is 75bhp and 1.8 is 90bhp, not a rocket ship but also not that slow either compared to some. with a couple small modifications the performance can be peppedup a bit, or save the pennys and go direct to ABF swap, do not pass gti cam

Yeah non gti's are where its at.. I got my 1.3 for £100 5 years ago.. It had a full gti makeover including interior etc straight away, and more bits over the years. It got the abf treatment last year when the 1.3 died,so its now so much improved from standard.. Plus its an uber rare non gti colour, so is almost unique. Not like all the mars red 8vs in my town anyway...drivers tend to have had less owners/abusers as well, alot of them tend to be in pretty good nick..

i love my driver! but it has an early gti interior. ive had her for a year, and had mostly trouble free motoring with her really, biggest problem is 20 year old car paranoia.
