rub it down to clean metal.. then get finer and finer grit paper.. till at the end you can use some metal polish to give it its shine

Wet and dry will take forever and a day....
Have you got a bench grinder, if so get some left and right threaded taper's..

Have a look on the bay for metal polishing kits, make sure you get one with a set of mops and diff grades of soap....
go from course to fine then to buffing...

Be warned it is a filthy job bud...get some goggles and heavy leather gloves as the alloy does heat up..

I did a 1200 Bandit swing arm this way and it came up really good...

Rich, to get the best polished finish then you will need a polishing kit and maybe some small bobs on a dremel to get in the hard to reach area's.

Best thing to do is get a kit with it all the stuff in it.

iv done all the meatal bits in the bay now including those little brass brake line nipple things

will be sorry to see the engine go, new one is going to have a mix of powdercoated black and a few polished bits - they are very hard to keep up with so keep that in mind. i polish mine with autosol and give it a top coat wax evey couple of weeks to keep it all mint
