not sure what is going on. even if i push the lever on the dash all the way up to hot hot hot i still only get cool cool cool air into the car. the lever is fine and i still get a convincing klunk as you change from cold to hot. any ideas of a solution are more than welcome.

blocked heater matrix? actually not too sure about heaters but know they can be a bit tempramental on golfs. check your coolant level as well to see if anythings going on there. when you flush/re-fill the cooling system you should push the lever to hot when your filling it.

Probably knackered heater pressure relief valves, vw have stopped making them recently but say they should be making some more for autumn 2005.
These are the plastic and metal valves near the bulkhead that were fitted as a recall in the 90s

thanx guys i will have a look around tomorrow. is there anyway that i can test either of these suggestions before i lump on replacing them.

We had the same problem with our GTi, upon further investigation we could see the matrix had been leaking within the enclosure it sits in, the matrix has been replaced with a new item and the safety valve has been removed altogether running the hoses direct for return and feed etc.
Problem no longer persists, the vw part quote is of the same part number for the MK2 & MK3 now as a revision, bascially it's a MK3 item all round now, better core, valve no longer in use.
We also have a 1.8 Driver which has never been recalled, we checked with VW UK to see if there was an issue or was is just an over sight, answer being not all the MK2's had a recall, the last/later models did nor require it due to matrix specification changes.

Just realised. G star. silly me. soz Tesh. could you give me an idea of how much a matrix is. Ps where the fek is it?

Dear Paulio,
Apologies for the late reply here must start keeping an eye out for all questions from all areas etc.
Okay the prices I have listed below.
Top of me head around £27.99 + vat for a pattern part, genuine which is the same part number for both the MK2 & 3 is £97.98 + vat.
On the genuine part we can do some sort of discount for you, the by-pass valves were discarded during the new installation on our car.
The matrix is housed behind the centre console in the car, which then conects to all the ducting and heater controls etc; a fairly lenghty and tideous job, we usually quote a day for matrix replacements.
If you ever fail to see a reply from me in time, then please feel free to either call, email or even use the PM function on this forum, those mediums are always checked daily.ÂÂÂ

Nicely done guys. What it ended up being was those vavles. i found this out by removing them completely and straight connecting them with a short length of 22mm copper pipe. jobs a goodun. Cheers for getting back to me with those prices Gstar. If i need anything in the future i will give you guys a shout.
