Hi My 1989 mk2 golf gti 1.8 16v is blowing cold air and when car is sat idol is boiling itself as the radiator fan is not kicking in. Its as if the water reaches the radiator but decides dot to flow round it so decides to push the water back into the bottle till it over flows. If anyone has had this problem please could you help me out. Also I need to find where the thermostat is if anyone can help me out with that too?
Cheers.

its on the water pump flange (if its the same as my 8v). so if the bottom hose to the radiator stays cold, it is the termostat.
Cold air from the interior heater is a seperate issue due to blocked heater matrix or failed heater by-pass valves. A suitable search of the mk2 section will provide answers and guides on repair

I know the pipes become hot very quickly even the bottom pipe on the radiator. I have been switching engine off when temp gauge is nearly to the max. There are no bubbles in the water when reving it. already has the blue cap on too. Seems to boil itself at the mo before the radiator becomes warm, but radiator does eventually get hot after it nearly decides to boil itself.

If the engine is overheating and the radiator is cold then the thermostat must be at fault :undecided:

or possibly the waterpump, or an airlock or...
hence the link to the coolant guide, go thru that and you'll figure out which of the above it is ;)
