Took my Mk 6 in for it's 2nd annual service today (40,000 miles in 13 months!) and asked the dealer about updating the satnav maps and postcodes for 2011.
They quoted me £189 for the new updated DVD - I told them to sod off. Ripoff.
1. Is this normal?
2. Does the 2011 update include the capability to enter a full UK postcode instead of the current version which misses the last 2 digits? Car is 13 montsh old so has 2009 maps I assume.
3. My car doesn't have a satnav DVD - I assume it is hard coded on to the hard drive. Why do they want to flog me a DVD when I assume it could be flashed on to the hard drive?
Experiences/hints/tips/download sites accepted.

You'll probs need to update your firmware to at least 2760 I think and then install the V7 maps (the latest) from a DVD.
See here about firmware http://www.my-gti.com/2291/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-to-version-2760-2762-2764-2766-2768
There are a few places you can get the v7 maps from
-
Thats looks complex to do? Anyone got a CD with firmwear all ready ? :undecided:
-
Ha-way Toon !
The v7 software (2010) isn't as restrictive as yours (2009), you can enter a partial code, a full code or simply a street name which I felt is much more useful !
Does anyone know when the 2011 maps/software is out? I am buying my missus a new Polo with SatNav and am hoping this has the latest version so I can install into mine, and pass onto 'certain friends' here !

I've got a cd I made with the 3800 firmware but no idea on the compatability with other units, so u can use at your own risk.

Would be okay to use my system ? :undecided:

A quick bit of info (as far as I have been able to work out / test):
- version 38xx of the firmware is in beta stage at the moment
- final release will be with the week 22 cars of this year
- new firmware will be able to accept point of interest (POIs) from the SD card
- it looks like the new firmware will also support speed camera alerts
- there are three beta versions, 3800, 3810 and 3890 (I am using 3810)
- if you need post code search, you will need firmware 2760 or newer and a 2010 DVD
- beta versions of the 2011 DVD are about, but I don't think they have newer maps!
- the new firmware will, I believe, work on all but the first version of the hardware (aka 'A')
I am just working on getting the speed camera alerts working from the SD card. Will mean you can update the cameras as often as you like and not bugger about with a DVD. (I'm also working with POInspect0r to get this all working.)

Alert as in it will chime or make a noise rather than just display the camera on screen? If so it will be a welcome addition.[/list]
-
It will definitely show the icon on the screen - as with any normal POI.
There is in the firmware the provision for direction, road speed and alert type. Once I know more, I will post. I would hope that even if you are not in Nav mode, it will do something!
-
Thanks for all the info folks. I think I'll wait until later in the year when that new firmware update comes along. May try and buy a 2010 DVD on ebay or something in the meantime. Amy ideas?
-
What is the most up to date version of the DVD folks?
I see various editions for sale on ebay between £40 and £100............ V6.1 seems to be the most recent? Some ship from Uk and some ship from Holland. Is that because the mapping is from a Dutch company - TeleAtlas?
I have the RNS510 setup and would assume the DVD over-writes the mapping that's already on the hard drive so you don't need to leave the DVD in - is that right?
Would this V6.1 have the full postcode entry facility or just newer road mapping?
What should I buy? And is there any way of checking the firmware version on my headunit or does that need dealer diagnostic equipment?
Thanks

@Toon:
- 7.0 (2010) or 7.1 (2011) have the full post codes.
- Press and hold the SETUP button and you should find the model info

Tried pressing and holding setup and no version / model info obvious - takes me to FM/AM set up mode. Doesn't give version.
System on, system off?
Map Mode?
-
keep holding for about 30 secs. sorry!

I thought this was disabled in newer firmware?
I don't think it worked in mine when I tried it a while back but maybe never gave it the full 30seconds!

Mines alerted me the other day that there was slow moving traffic ahead. I didn't have the NAV on and was merrily listening to my SD card.
I wasn't aware it had this facility. I was mightily impressed.
-
Long press still gives you info, just not as much!
If you are being guided (route planned), then I would expect it to let you know about traffic. I'd want it to let me know there was a camera ahead if I was just tootling about.

I'll try the long press next time I'm out.
No I wasn't being guided.
I hadn't touched the NAV at all. Just got in the car for my normal drive to work and after 5 mins of driving it came over the music that was playing that there was congestion ahead. I actually thought I had imagined it but it repeated it again.
Right enough when I put the map on I could see the line of cars appear on the screen.

 Thats expensive just for a map update, it would be cheaper to buy a tom tom every year.

Ah but it wouldn't look as nice would it!?
I still can't beleive how much OEM sat nav costs from the unit to the updates - how can Tom Tom and Garmin etc. make theirs so cheap in comparison or is it a case of mass volume on smaller margins = bigger ££££s
-
Cost is a mix of a number of things:
- VW don't have to try so hard to keep costs down
- TomTom needs to get low cost, as wholesaler, distributor and shop all need to make their bit
- VW kit is integrated in to a much larger system and costs more to develop
- higher quality components
- with people like Siemens and VOD making the kit, it costs more
- volume of sales - many, many, many times more TomToms than VW, Seat, Audi and Bentley motors about
- and lastly ... because they can!
I wouldn't change it for anything. Neatly integrated, far less desirable to a thief and adds to the whole GTI / GTD thing for me.

Look peeps, the software comes out (more or less) every half year or so.
I am buying my wife with a new Polo (yes, with Sat Nav) in April/May, so hope that this software is the most-up-to-date-software (i.e. early 2011).
Once I have installed it into my 2010 GiT and sent it to Steve30 it is all yours, for doing the rounds.
If you want it, PM me with your address
-
^^^ I thought the Polo uses the RNS-310 which has different mapping software???

That's right stevep so he will be well and truly up the creek. Only gb and n.Ireland info aswell if I remember rightly
