Title: Mk4 time!
Post by: Mew on 20 February 2011, 15:26
Well, I never thought I'd do it, but yesterday I bought a mk4

Late 2000 1.8T (AUM)
12 months MOT
2 owners (an Architect, and before that a good friend)
Pretty much FSH with a load of receipts
2 new Yokahama tyres (with decent matching rears), new front discs and pads
1 month old battery
recent (enough) cambelt and waterpump done at VW
Recaro interior, CD changer, AC
EVERYTHING works!

I'm chuffed to bits with it tbh, the only downsides are that it has done 173k and needs a coilpack (already on order), but this was more than reflected in the price I paid :lipsrsealed: The guy even delivered it to me!

And now the pics (I haven't washed it or hoovered it out yet). And before someone says it, yes it is only a standard mk4, but hopefully the pics show how tidy it is:

Yes they are, guess it has had some paint in the past or debadged maybe

I did notice that when I went to view it, so I had a good look around the rear. I can't see any masking lines and I'm pretty sure all the paint matches. I checked the boot floor inside and outside and all seems fine, including all trim and the build sticker, and all of the panel gaps seem to be good.
I guess it may have had a new bootlid early on in life, as the last owner definitely wouldn't have debadged it, and by the sounds of it the owner before him wouldn't have done.

I may debadge it anyway, although I had intended to leave it standard :embarassed:

After some seriously hard work to get the guys at VW to just look on the system rather than keep telling me i'm being rediculous in suggesting they might replace them for free, I'm now booked in for some new coils next week.

Total expenditure so far: approx £610

If the coils end in 115Q or 115R they will not replace them, I had 4 new ones last week, my old ones were H and L, the new coils are a different design with a grey top.

Mine are old, end in G from memory. I've already replaced 2 with new genuine items, but I'll put the dodgy 2 back in before I go into VW and then keep the replacements as spares. Very nearly bought these not so long ago:

.....glad I didn't now.

Any ideas what part number the new ones are?

Not sure, I think they are the same part number but end in U.

I find mine much smoother now.

I've been having idle issues lately, hunting quite badly between 400-1200 rpm at times and at other times it would just cut out when approaching a junction.

I knew one of the breather hoses had a slight split so that was replaced, and I also gave the throttle body a thorough clean. Car now idles perfectly, doesn't cut out and pulls harder.

Throttle body alignment to be done at work and then its job done
