Title: Door locks....I havent a clue...
Post by: rmeese5 on 19 February 2011, 21:19
Ok I am very new to the VW scene. Iam pretty sure that I bought a total dog..95 GTI 8v. Nothing but probems. But if you beat a stubborn dog long enough it will start to listen! So someone please enlighten me.  And feel free to take a couple shots at me as I do not know enough about this car.  So how are the locks suposed to work in this car? I just replaced the driver side door lock as it had the very common broken part.  When I turn the key to unlock the car only the driver door unlocks and all the windows roll down.  When I lock the car only the driver door locks and the windows do not roll up.
Are all the doors supposed to lock when I lock the driver door? They sure all feel like they are not manual locks. Currently my driver side door has the only working key hole, the passenger and the hatch do not turn. Does the hatch lock break like the door locks do?
Also by my driver door lock knob there is a little bulb that does not light up. I was told it was the factory alarm.  there car also has an aftermarket cd player in it that is probably put in pretty shady. Alot of the japenese cars and american cars will have problems after the oe stereo is taken out if the correct wiring is not followed. is this the same with the GTI as well?  First thing in the morning Im going to play around in the fuse box.
Thanks for all the expertise!!

sounds weird to me shouldn't be opening any windows ! and should lock all dorrs when locked inless theres a problem also the boot lock should lock from the central locking ive had 3 mk3 golfs and none of the keys lock the boot manually dont know why tbh and as for the stereo whats happening the light by the door lock will be an aftermarket alarm i would have thought never seen a factory one by the drivers door lock inless it was a dummy light ! hope some of this helps :D

Mark 3 GTI's have a feature where if you lock the door and hold the key n the locking position it will close all the windows and the same with opening the doors to open the windows. As for the central locking, it should work and is controlled by an air pipe. Check the air pipe in the connector that plugs into the door. Maybe a central locking pump fault. Do you get a whirring kind of noise for a few seconds after opening the drivers door lock??

What Deano said, if you can't hear the central locking pump whir then the chances are the pump is shot, otherwise it could be a leak in one of the pipes :undecided:

Nope there is no sound when i open the door. I just examined the air tube and it appears to still be good.  I will have to look into the air pump. also I found 2 cut wires in my door..hmm..need a wiring diagram so that I can see what they go to.
thanks for the advice i never would have figure that the central locking was pnuematic and not electric.!

Just for reference the c/l pump is located in the boot near the offside tail light
