Title: Aaaargh!! I'm starting to think I've bought a dog!!
Post by: Fallenidol1 on 18 February 2011, 13:22
.....not the cute, fluffy, four legged kind either!!

Ok, so I've bought a mk3 16v GTI and was told that it cuts out at idle and is needing a new idle valve...... Well, I replaced the valve today and it still cuts out!

Does anybody have any other ideas?
It's had a new gearbox fitted and I was wondering if in may need the throttle adjusted?

Please, if anyone can shed any light on the problem I'd be eternally grateful!!
Cheers.

Go into the Mk3 Section mate and read the numerous threads on this subject!

They can be a pain as there seems to be different solutions but once fixed you will love your car!

does it carry on runnign as long as the throttle is held open? if so it could be the replacemnt isv is dead too. i went through 4 before i found one that worked!  also, check the isv buzzes with the ignition on. it might be so quiet you have to put a finger to it to feel it

Yes, the engine will run as long as I'm giving it a little throttle.
It's really irritating because it's great fun to drive but I feel like such a pillock when I pull up at traffic lights and the engine dies because I've forgotten to tap the accelerator!

MAF?? Does it run a but lumpy when ticking over? Also check how clean/dirty the throttle body is...
