My MK3 Golf 1.4L isn't running at it's best if I'm honest :cry: It seems to run OK when it's cold but as soon as it gets warm acceleration drops considerably and any slope/hill i've had it. Revs drop fast and I'm lucky if I'm doing 15/20mph up a hill. Quite embarrassing when you have people flashing you behind you because you are going too slowly! :drool:
The engine has a ticking sound which doesn't sound very healthy and the oil pressure light is on most of the time (changed sensor and has plenty of oil, never lost oil) so I'm assuming I'm just losing pressure. My dad being a mechanic told me the engine is getting tight when it warms up putting stress on the engine causing it to lose so much performance.
To the point, I'm considering changing my 1.4 petrol engine to a 1.6L golf mk3 engine of the same year. It's only done 73,000 mile which is around 15,000 less than mine.
Would this be possible? Almost a "straight swap" if you will? or will I come across a lot of problems? I was going to opt for a 2.0 GTI engine but my dad told me that would be too much hassle and the insurance would go up a lot when I declare it being only 19 an all! The jump to a 1.6 doesn't cost me that much more on the £2000 premium I already pay so i thought why not :grin:

Better off selling up and buying something else, fitting a 1.6 is a major ballache for so little gain.

If your Dad is a mechanic why cant he rebuild the existing engine?
And I've never heard of an engine getting tight! Unless it overheats!

the mk3 1.6 spi uses most of the same parts so it's not really involved to swap (you will need the ecu & key if from a 95 onwards car)
the fuel system, gearbox, brakes etc etc are all the same (I'm unsure of the cooling system though? but that would usually only involve the rad)

Hmm.. I'm not so sure, my current engine is running badly so even just a new 1.4 might make a difference to me.

He's not sure if it's worth it and I said for the few hundred quid he may as well put a 1.6 in :p I haven't heard about an engine getting tight either but apparently thats my dads diagnosis! :o

I don't have the ecu or a key for that engine. I will have to ask if the seller has it, if not should I stay clear?

I'll check if the guy has it otherwise I won't bother with that engine. I'll get a quote now and see what the damage is :p

Well I'd really like a Golf mk2 I could just look into getting one of those and selling my Mk3 but I'd be lucky to get £500 for it :p

I doubt I'd be able to afford a GTI insurance wise :p I got a quote for a GTI 16v on my current insurance and they wanted another £1000! I already pay £2038 like I said above :p

How old is the car?
If it's a 1.6 MPi and you have a 1.4MPi then it's an easy swap.
Engine in, use the same box, brakes everything and apparently it will even run on the same ECU, albeit poorly, so you'll need to swap the ECU.
Or is it an early one?

You'd better off spending a few hundred quid on another mk3 from ebay or something and making one decent car out of two tbh.

I disagree with getting a new car. A 1.4 to 1.6 swap is really really easy and worthwhile if insurance is a killer (and you want to keep your old car)

If you have a decent car with a dicky engine and someone is willing to fit another engine then I see good sense In a swap (I know 15bhp isn't much but it will make a reasonable difference over a 1.4!)

yeah i guess it's just that i would have thought a modified 1.4 would cost more to insure than a factory built 1.6 for starters. that extra insurance outlay coupled with the new 1.6 engine and ancillaries would surely be better spent towards another already working vehicle? it's not like these cars cost much to buy is it.

I also expect insurance will be more on a 1.4 modified with a 1.6 engine, then just a standard 1.6 despite them fundamentally being the same car.
I suggest getting a more specific diagnostic of the problem and just fixing the 1.4, do a compression test etc to find out if there actually is anything wrong with your existing engine, it might just be a simple ignition issue or poor fueling/breathing.
In my opinion changing the engine for a 1.6 is simply not worth it.
