Title: MK3 golf gti leaking from center of roof
Post by: Craig1379 on 17 February 2011, 18:51
Hello all im new to the site hope this is in the right area. My friend just got a mk 3 gti golf 1994 and when he got it there was a lake in the rear passenger footwell. So we cleaned it up but it came back again so i went on the net and found out that his sun roof drains mite be blocked. And the 2 front ones where so i unblocked them and after a couple of days the lake returned but the damp is in the center of the roof and nowhere near the sunroof or the sides of the car could it be the rear sunroof drains?.

P.S/ no rust or holes in the roof.

If the GTI has the roof mounted aerial then the rubber seals on these tend to perish and let in the water. Check this out next

Moe then likely mate. If the front ones wer blocked then so r the back ones. Another thing to check is the sunroof seal. If there's any cracking or gaps then that will let the water in aswell...

It is a gti but the aerial is on the front of the car next to front window. And have poured water down the rear sunroof drains and they are fine and if it was the sunroof i would of thought the damp would be around the sunroof but it starts about 3 inches back from it :(

Just to make myself clear the rear passenger footwell is wet and so is the center of the car roof is that 2 problems or is it linked the seats at the back are damp but not soaking like the floor.

Have a look under the roof liner. If you start at the back, (if its a roof mounted aerial) you will see the retaining nut. Obviously if there is moisture around that area, its the seal that is duff, and will cost you sod all to replace. If not its the sunroof and you will have to look into it further. Not sure whats involved with regard to sunroof seals ect... tbh

Is it a 5 door? If it is then it could be 2 different leaks. You can get the door card off and look at the door membrane for tears and that its sealed all the way around.

To be honest, theres not much else for the water to get through except the sunroof if you have a wing mounted aerial. Check whether the rear drains are flowing the water as fast as the fronts as they could be partially blocked, would explain an overflow onto the headlining.

Incidently my Mk2 had a torn sunroof seal and blocked drains resulting in damp rear seats. Eventually the headlining fell down but I think that was due to the whole car being sh!t.
