Hello,
I looked at a VR6 last week, and hope to purchase it soon, but do have a couple of queries, if any1 can advise would be grateful. I had a VR6 before, so am reasonably familiar with them, but would like a little help regarding these "features" if possible..
The car is a 1995 / N, 60k, 3 owners, 5 door manual, black with black leather, Highline BBS alloys, little black VR6 badge, VR6 on the door sills...so presume it's a kosher Highline (not that it worries me too much if it wasn't).
Car was grubby but looked very straight, couldn't see any signs of damage / paintwork...and the price is good, but any thoughts on these:
1. Insulation - at side of passenger airbag - there was a little of what looked like acoustic / sound dampening material poking out from the side of the airbag (on both sides - most obviously between the airbag and the air vent). Is this common - or has the airbag deployed and not been replaced correctly ?! Any ideas ?! The seller didn't indicate he really knew why..
2. Engine - sounded a little bit "mechanical / tappety" - i.e. not totally silent. My previous 1997 with 105k sounded similar and was gr8 to drive...extremely strong and silky, so assuming that these do make a little noise (even with 60k miles)
3. Damp floor in boot - but couldn't see an obvious source of water coming in - does this happen if car just left outside all the time ? (i.e. in the snow / wet recently).
4. Gearbox - seemed quite long in the throw, certainly not short and snappy, believe it's a cable shift in these, but can't remember what my old one was like.
5. Plastic "scuttle" by the wipers breaking up - the strip that runs under the wipers by the windscreen was breaking up a bit, presume fairly easy to replace and not an issue.
6. Rear windows not working - odd that both broken, assuming a fuse for these.
Thanks for reading ! Dan.

Right sounds either not looked after or clocked to me.
1. Not sure without a pic.
2. Could be tappets or chain problems, VERY strange at ONLY 60k.
3. Look for signs of rust where panels are joined, lift the carpet up and have a look. Sounds like its been hit in the rear, panels repaired but not sealed properly.
4. Should be ok, providing gears engage smoothly.
5. Probably get one from a scrappy.
6. Could be worn out window motors or wiring problems, i don't think its a fuse.
I would stay away, especially because of no.3. Its not normal to have a wet carpet in the boot, ALERT accident damage poorly repaired likely.
I hope that helps.

On the rear window problem check the wiring in the door rubber when its open.Give it a shake when operating the windows as the wiring tends to wear with time where the doors have been opened and shut.If not the the winder motors need replacing as i had too at a cost of 60 quid a pair from the scrappy :)

Cheers,
# 3 did have me concerned, will have another look.
Car wears what looks like original number plates (as they have the stamp of the VW dealer and are 10 year old looking / warped) which would normally indicate it's not been in a big smack, but always possible.
#2 - he says car has been to VW all the time apart from last service (Autotechnic) so would hope it was mechanically sound.
#4,5,6 shouldn't be a big deal then, touch wood !
Not seen all the paperwork yet, but car is from a chap at work (so he won't be doing a runner) - else I'd think the mileage was suspiciouly low...
Thanks again !

Could always get it checked out to see if its been recorded as having accident damage or any hp left on it

Yep good plan will run an HPI on it - presume they're the best bet ?

Just found this, ?25 as opposed to HPI's ?40....presume it all comes out the same database:

The water in the boot is an worrying issue mate!

The water in the boot is an worrying issue mate!
I agree ! Note that it's a little damp under the carpet, not pools of water ! I had a mk1 that was similar, from memory it was coming in thru a chipped light, or possibly a poor seal, was a long time ago...

The car doesn't sound right at all, give it a miss.
There are plenty of genuine golfs out there.
-
i will 2nd that
-
So you guys never seen or heard of a 10 year old car experiencing water leaks ?
-
Not just that mate, the rattling at 60k is bad as well.

Yep i'll have another listen cheers, I have been known to be ultra fussy / cautious :embarassed:
Only the paranoid survive they say !

I would leave well alone mate, take your time and find the car you really want, one that you know is ok.
Dont let your heart rull your head !
-
Agree with Paul, far too many potential problems
-
Hmm thanks for your input guys but I'm not sure I agree with you
Will look yet again, plus check the paperwork (and HPI), but basically it's
- very low mileage
- 3 owner
- full history
- being sold by someone at work (whom I really don't think would lie or sell me a dud, he wants shot as a new car arriving next week)
I have looked round it three times or so, and for a 10 year old car that's been left outside it's in good shape.
Have seen enough duff cars in my time to spot a wrong un' (famous last words )
It's also at what I consider a very good price (what would ur estimates be assuming the above is correct).
