I currently only do around 8000 miles a year. I did consider a diesel before I bought my Gti last year, but I decided I didnt do enough miles to warrant getting a diesel (plus I wasn't yet ready to sacrifice that Petrol power!).
How many miles do you think I need to be doing each year to make it worth having a Diesel? Cheers

About 1 million miles and thats not enough in my opinion, i spent 8 years in Audi diesels, so glad to be out of a diesel now!

If your only doing 8k a year then stick with petrol, I only do 1500 to 2000 a year so am happy to stick with petrol.

Your 2006 GTI should last for at least another 8 years. Keep it and save save save.

I went from a BMW 335d M Sport to my Golf R32.......
Personally, if you want economy AND performance, then you need to spend a lot of money to get something that will still be fun to drive. My 335d (work car) was superb. Chipped it, and was running 350bhp and 730NM torque. But best of all, it still averaged 37mpg. On a long run I would see 40-45mpg.
I do miss the oomph of the BM, but the sound of my .:R is beautiful. Yeah, the 20mpg is a bit of hit, but who cares. And I still do nearly 20k per year.
For the mileage your doing mate, stick with a Petrol. Honestly, think you'd save pennies rather than pounds overall.

Twice as many as you're doing.
Under 12 and you really won't feel any benefit at all - I do 8000 and I hardly go to the petrol pump - though on the odd weekend away it can be three visits!

Thanks for your comments. My Gti is on lease hire so I will be chopping her in for a newer model in 21 months. Was considering a GT 170 or similar. But gonna stick with petrol now me thinks. Next on the list is either an ED30 or a MK6 Gti depending on the old finances. Im saving already!

This lease hire lark seems to always present a moving target. You miss out on the pleasure of owning a car from new, knowing it's history, and running it, in the cars later years, for peanuts.

Egbutt...it may be me...but whaddaymean?

The only reason people get a diesel is because they either do loads of miles (which you dont) or cant afford the petrol or aren't really that into cars. Why would anyone want their car to sound like a tractor and finish revving at 4k when you can have a petrol?
As long as I can afford it I will be in a petrol.

What category do I fit into then? My mileage has dropped since we moved offices to below 10K and I'm safe to say I'm very much a car enthusiast and I could afford the petrol if needed
FYI mine revs past 5K RPM :smug:
To answer the OP's question. I did consider an ED30 before buying my Audi TDI. Having owned a diesel for over 4 years I couldn't bear the thought of having to fill up twice to travel the same distance on one tank of diesel.
Whilst I'd love the power and the potential of the ED30, for me in the mid range, a diesel has enough grunt to make short work of any over-taking manoeuvres, and with a remap you do have to pay attention as you might find yourself a little close to the bumper as you pull out....
In this day and age, with the amount of traffic and the state of our roads, diesel is just as quick across country as its petrol equivalent. There are speed limits remember  Also, fuel prices are only going one way......

Clinically insane? :D

I only buy cars now when there is something really different and new. So when the DSG gearbox came along I bought the GTI. Now I am waiting for all electric drive with a ic motor to top up the power storage. I would not dream of just swapping a good car for a newer version of the same. But because the OP is forced to give back his car to the owners he is in this miserable position of considering some smog box. Tell them to shove their lease and buy a good secondhand GTI, map it and keep it for years.

Not all of us can afford that Egbutt! I get company car allowance, so my monthly lease hire payments are almost completely covered by my employer. Lease hire is brilliant really, makes a nice car affordable for most and means you can get a new car every 3 or so yrs. Suits me just fine!

an oil burner is about 5.5p a mile cheaper (on fuel)
on 8k miles pa this works out about £36 a month
having had both the big win is stoping for fuel less (range)

Just get the Mk6 GTD its brilliant motor you will never look back :smug: :smug: :smug: :smug:

^^ but still looks back now and again and misses his old ed30 though

Get a diesel if mpg is important, maybe go the whole hog and get a bluemotion.
The VAG diesel engines are excellent they just don't have the same smile factor.
If you want to enjoy your driving then petrol all the way. If you want to be sensible then diesel it is.

indeed i do Steve, there are times when i'm driving and just think to myself if only i had ed30, I could take that silly idiot in front of me

Yeah not ready to be sensible just yet! Ive always had petrol cars in the past. I must admit I have driven a couple of oil burners and was a bit dissapointed with them. I know the new diesel VW's are much better and was very interested to see what you guys had to say about them. I only need to fill up my Gti twice a month at the moment so cost isn't too bad, but the road tax is a bit steep mind!
Saying that it will be interesting to see how things develop in the next couple of yrs, petrol prices, tax etc. The lease on my current car runs out in 21 months time and diesel may be the only option

my wifes car was an 2008 170 gt golf diesel it got stolen last month, she has now replaced it with a gti .
the gt was a nice car 3 door had 18's leather ed30 rear valance etc it pulled nice but always seemed boring to drive, it was doing 38/39 mpg around the villages and daily commute. now she has bought a white 2006 mk5 gti and loves it. never heard her say that about the gt. must admit i much prefer the gti and the sound of the exhaust. much more of an interesting car to drive. the gti is doing 30 mpg on the same runs
ps i had a tsi golf plus for this weekend courtesy car not really very powerfull but ok, it was doing 38mpg i was impressed

I average 54mpg on my 31 mile commute to work along the A14 in my mk5 GT TDi... def more economical than my mk2 GTi, but a less entertaining drive. I have got my mfa reading 59mpg one time stuck behind a lorry
