After replacing the track rod on the drivers side, i have noticed that both of the boots (inner and outer) are split. The one on the CV boot i did today when putting the wheels on full lock when the whole front was jacked up.
Is it easyier to buy a second hand driveshaft and replace the whole lot, or to do both boots as a kit?
Also how hard is it to replace the driveshaft?
Thanks in advance

its very fiddly replacing the inner boot with shaft connected. Remove the entire shaft by undoing the inner cv bolts which are 8mm spline, undo the hub nut at other end(while car is on the ground with wheel on) and the lower ball joint (three 13mm bolts/nuts) separate driveshaft from hub(can be thricky, try a hub puller).
-
Just to add, if the boots have been split a while, best to get new cv joints.
-
Cheers for the advice, i think i might just buy a new driveshaft (2nd hand) with both CV's attatched, then it saves a lot of messing around......
-
good idea, just try and be sure you get a good condition before you pay (ie ebay)
-
No need to replace cv joints, unless they are knocking.
Make sure you clean the joints out thoroughly with parafin or white spirit.
As already said, remove the shaft from the car first.
Can you actually change the inner boot with the shaft still on the car??
-
yes you can but it is very tricky fiddly getting the circlip on.
-
I don't have any knocking, so you suggest i just buy the kit to re-do the boots?
-

I found it fiddly enough with the shaft off the car
I'd like to see someone try with it in situ

Yes, but make sure you clean out the joints thoroughly with a solvent.

I did it myself on the roadside in 0 degrees weather a couple of weeks ago. I mentioned on here about my gearbox prob, so had to put another box on and a new joint.

I must admit tho I would not recommend it i was covered in blood and grease and i had a f**kin awful stiff neck and back. took me an hour just to get the clip on

I have just bought a 2nd hand drive shaft from ebay, complete with CV joints and boots in tact. Can someone please confirm whether it is just a like for like swap? I read something about the CV boots being glued or something? I'm going to fit it tomorrow, any advice before i start?
Cheers

what shaft was it you bought?

Yes it is just a swap. My advice is make sure you get the right tool for the inner cv bolts. Iis a spline fitting tool size 8( I think). Its not torx. When doing them up, go opposites and torque them gradually and evenly.

Just an identical one from an 8V Gti.

OK thanks mate, I'll go and but the right spline tool tonight, by 8, do you mean 8mm?
-
I think so yes. The one I used had an 8 on it, so I presume its 8 mm.
-
ok, straight swap then. some have the cv glued to the hub, but im pretty sure this is only done on some VR6 models.
very worst case leave the cv in the hub, tap out old shaft and either rebuild it with new cvs or tap off the outer cv on the replacement shaft and swap it over after fitting a good outer cv boot
-
Ok, cheers guys.
i might take photo's while im doing it as i struggled to find a guide online.
-
never heard of cv being glued before?!
-
cv glued into hub, not cv glued to shaft ;)
as i say its done on some VR6 models, i have no idea why but there you go
-
What Jon means is on some models the splines have loctite put on them from factory.
The outer cv joint splines that is.
I've seen this on a mk3 gti 16v, as well as a vr6.
I needed a hub puller to separate the shaft from the hub both times.
-
I see what you mean now. I needed a hub puller too, thought this was because the shafts are wedge shape, and they get quite literally wedge right in./
