My 91 gti 8V has a few problems.
A puff of smoke comes out when i first start it up. If i leave it ticking over i can smell fuel. I've been told the fumes when sat behind it are choking.
When I put my foot down it stinks of fuel out the rear.
When cold it some times sounds like it's running on 3 but only briefly then it's fine again but I have noticed a kind of flat spot. Like it's running out of fuel but then it's fine again.
It does use oil. I top it up every month.
I've been told it could be valve stems but then also been told it could be rings?
Any help would be much appreciated.

if it stinks of fuel then its not going to be stem seals, replace the blue temp sensor with a new one from vw, if that doesnt help have a read of the digifant tuning guide

I think the smell of fuel is just another problem!

Ive just got a co meter and timing light to take advantage of RJ's guide. That should help reduce the fuel smell from mine.... But they are old tech cars, from a time before the current more stringent emissions regulations- they will whiff a bit from cold!
I'd re-tune it, as RJ suggested.
Stem seals would be the first thing to do in reducing oil use. It could be rings, but it seems stem seals tend to go long before the piston rings.

You could be overfueling to the point that the oil is being broken down by the fuel.
You might have a ecu problem that is holding the injectors open longer than required, it is not running a superchip by any chance.

No super chip just cams and panel filter.
I'm booking it in to get the stems done and a proper tune up.
