Title: Panel Beater Recommendations (who have experience with MKVI Golf GTI's)
Post by: AGB on 15 February 2011, 21:18
Dear All

The neighbour's scaffolders who are working on the front of their house have added a couple of small dents to my car. They denied it was them. I asked them if they were sure. They said yes. I produced CCTV footage. I paused it in the right places. 'Oh, it was accidental, he didn't realise he'd hit the car'. I pressed play. The scaffolder goes over to my car and is seen inspecting the damage. Still sure?

After he tried to persuade me to send the car to his mate Barry who is a top notch panel beater, I pointed out that the courts would be more than happy to send me to a panel beater of my choice on the irrefutable evidence I produced.

Would appreciate any recommendations from any of the MK6 owners who have had any work done by London based panel beaters. Front left wing has a small dent and back right wheel arch has another ding where the flat pressing of the wheel arch meets the contour leading up to the C-pillar.

Anger at the damage countered to a degree by their reaction at being completely nailed by CCTV. Paid for itself on the first time of asking.

Thanks in advance of any recommendations.

Alex

Alex,

I am so sorry about this. Utter carelessness and disrespect.

May I suggest you go to a VW Bodyshop which is conveniently located to you.

I use ARC, Park Royal. John Ford is the Manager. Tel No 0208 961 8961
http://www.arclondon.co.uk/
They are good people and will rectify any mistakes without any quibbling. Your car will also be well cared for with no additional damage being incurred.

However, if the paint surface is not broken then the best person is Martin Leach, The Dentman. He is the best of the best. No doubt. Tel 07774 812 512
http://www.dentman.co.uk/google.html?gclid=CMmw2f2Si6cCFcoe4QodiR39dg

I moved my car away from my house last week as the house next door but one has scaffolding with monkeys climbing all over.

Sorry to hear this but made up you have the footage showing both damage and inspection by said twits. Why can't people be more careful and also just do the right thing when they have done wrong?

A panel beater who has been used on a Mk6?

A panel beater with a good reputation is what you are after, regardless of marque/make/model.

Try Paynes Body Technik in Iver, outstanding work, and many VAG showcars have been through their doors.

Thanks Asker, I'll give them a look see.

Doc, yep, eloquently put. Just wait till I YouTube the footage and buy a Google keywords campaign against their business name.

Thanks mate, I will look them up. It was a veiled attempt to keep out of trouble with the mods as there were a couple of the guys who have had work done and were happy with the results.

Like amw1 has already said try one of the dentmaster or similar companies. I have seen these guys perform minor miracles on cars.

I agree re dentmaster

Had a crease on top of my drivers door that Audi said needed a new skin to repair. Dent man was able to do it and a few other smaller dents/dings all in for £50.

I'd have paid double and I couldn't see any sign of the dent afterwards.

+1 for dent masters (although they are a franchise iirc)

they have all the tools depending on how bad the damage is and can usually do it on your driveway

Bloody scaffolders  They are the one group of people I always have problems with on large projects at work. A law unto themselves, they care not a jot about property or even their own safety. When we have scaffolders in we watch them like hawks.

This will make you laugh.  They have managed to slightly damage the Black Mk6 Golf Match belonging to the guy whose house has been scaffolded! It has now got a ding right in the middle of the bonnet. The owner is furious. Poetic justice?

Thanks for all the messages of support guys. The temptation to fashion a noose off their scaffolding and staple the repair bill to it is almost too much to resist. I'm definitely going to give Dentmaster a call.

The thing that irritates me the most, not a single piece of damage to the car has been attributable to me other than a scratch on the wheel. I remember the car I had before, I wasn't as precious about it and nothing ever happened to it. Since I've had the Mk6, I've had a stone chip on the roof from what sounded like Halley's Comet ricocheting off the top, I've had a cyclist go into the back of me the other week, scaffolders putting small dents into the car and then some shopper bashing the side of it leaving me to find another small dent. Oh yeah, and I've had two punctures in my back left in consecutive months.

She's a year old next month, they do grow up quickly.

Alex:

Your eloquent post made me laugh.

Dentmaster IMO are not good enough. I know all their operatives in the London area!

Martin Leach, The Dentman, is the very best in the business. He is a refined man and is a true artist. He does not belong to that 'cor blimey' brigade, thank Heaven.

Sorry your car is suffering with small-pox.

All get fixed I am sure and be as good as new again.

Thanks Asker, that's who I meant actually. I dropped the Da Vinci of Dents an email with photographs this morning and am just awaiting his quotation.

I'll post some before and after images in case it helps some of the other forum members in making a decision.

He's got a great sense of humour and is the perfect gentleman. He drives Ewan McGregor's BMW bike that was in that road trip TV series. Tell Martin you know me. We had good dealings together. Say Hi!
All the best.

Alex: Just left him a message on your behalf.

Cool, thanks for that Asker.

I've been harping on about the scaffolders but the MD rang me up today and was actually very reasonable and it wasn't because I had them by the short and curlies. He apologised for his foreman who he referred to as 'having broken the mould' and as a difficult fellow to manage at the best of times. I was genuinely taken aback based on the denials that I'd initially encountered. He just said that they had public liability insurance so it was no skin off his nose, he wasn't going to be unreasonable about it.

So, here is the damage on the back wheel arch. Do you reckon that Martin could fix this Asker based on repairs he has undertaken on Wolfgang?

Glad they were reasonable.
However, that does not look very good. Hell of a dent. The paint surface seems to have been broken a bit. He can get rid of the dent probably, but you might need a localised (?) re-spray. IMO that is more of a bodyshop job. Aarrrrgh.
I really feel for you.

I think the lacquer is scuffed, I'd like a second opinion and haven't started messing around with it in case I do more damage. It probably looks worse than it does paint wise due to the reflection.

Alex: Don't touch it, please. See what he says. If it's only the lacquer and it has not gone through to the undercoat, then I think you'll be ok. If he can't fix it, then a bodyshop it is. IMO. Aarrgh again.

+1 That's always the way. My GTi is the first car I've been totally obsessed with and to date I've had a couple of self inflicted wounds, a similar issue with a stone chip on the roof (thought I'd been shot by a sniper), a motorbike handlebar damage my wing mirror and kwik effing twits damage a Monza shadow alloy. As I love the car so much I've had everything repaired to date otherwise I know it will just bug me otherwise.

Oh how true. I don't give a stuff about the Merc. But my GTI is another matter. I simply cannot understand why I am so nuts about it. This is beginning to really concern me. Maybe I should let Wolfgang find his wings.

I DON'T THINK SO. AT LEAST FOR NOW.

It's a Merc C Class 350 CDI Sport (AMG body kit and big wheels), 7 speed Auto, fully loaded specced and delivered on the same day as the GTI. :undecided:

PS: I have scaffolded houses on either side of me and the workers are throwing and somtimes missing bricks etc into the skips. A blind man could not miss! Plus the filthy language. I had to ask them to temper this as there are children around.
They are driving me nuts.

A decent dent man worth his salt should get that out even although its on a crease.
Its hard to tell from the picture but it just looks like a reflection rather than paint damage.

You have got to love the "orange peel" on the Golf. Truly shocking
