Hi all
I've been wondering whether it's worth investing in my own cable/software ?
I've seen this for a lot less than the Ross Tech ones at "only" £80
http://www.vag-diagnostics.com/info.html
I've done a search on this forum but not found much info (realise my powers of search may be pants!)
Thoughts?
-
That's a non genuine version and that's expensive for a non genuine VCDS, you will not be able to update it past the version 10.6 software that it comes with.
-
Thanks Doc
So, only the original will do?
-
It's your choice, you pay your money, you take your chances.
It should work but it sounds expensive for a blag to me.
I'll have a scout around for a cheaper alternative
-
Thanks again.

Right here is my 2pence worth. On that website there is no email addresses, no adresses, no nothing on how to make any contact = suspect to start with.
Next step http://whois.domaintools.com/vag-diagnostics.com (http://whois.domaintools.com/vag-diagnostics.com)
This tells me its registered in stockholm ok, fair enough
Next http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=Gottfrid+Swartholm&meta= (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=Gottfrid+Swartholm&meta=)
Interesting that the name is similar to this person but on just different. notice the V and W in the surname. Funny that it comes from Sweden aswell?
Suspect.
I hope Ross-Tech have this patented as surely this is just ripping them off as it claims to fully work?
-
Hmmm
You're a detective and a half!
So the old adage tha tif its too good ot be true then it usually is?!
Back to my original query - is Ross Tech the only place to get these cables? (Either direct or using the link that Doc posted earlier?)

You can get original cables HERE (http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_VCMC.html)
I had a cheap eBay one once but it kept losing comms so bought the original.
I don't mind paying, considering the effort that has been put into the development and the amount of use it has had.
-
For genuine Ross-Tech leads they have distributors (http://www.ross-tech.com/distributors.html) I bought mine from Ilexa because I try to support the UK. You can get them a bit cheaper direct of Ross-Tech if you get a good exchange rate.
There are very cheap none genuine leads on eBay but you have to use VCDS-Lite which doesn't have all options available, Function Chart / Feature Comparison (http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/vag-functions.html). It all depends how much checking and adjusting you want to do or how much you can afford.
There are things that people are trying but I don't want to post them on here.
-
Tops and bottoms, most buy blag versions then move onto the genuine one, save yourself a few quid and buy a genuine VCDS once
OR
Rent this one: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=180337.0

Where are you based? Are you looking for a permanent cable in your toolbox or just for playing?
-
Hi
I'm in Yorkshire (Huddersfield)
I'd been toying with buying one if it was cheap enough but I guess it's about having a play and seeing what I can do to make the car more personalised i.e. dial staging; MPH display etc.
-
If you plan on keeping your car for longer than 12 months or you if your next car is going to be within the VAG range then its a worthwhile investment as it could potentially save you hundreds in dealer diagnostic fees
Also, if you buy the HEX-CAN version you can scan all the VAG groups cars :nerd: Its a good way of meeting local dubbers too as you can offer to help out and recoup the cost of the lead :afro:
I bought my lead nearly 4 years ago and its been invaluable

Your only an hour away from me - dive over if you want and you can use my VCDS lead.

How much would the whole kaboodle cost?
I will keep the GTI for 24 months. After which I may or may not buy a VAG car.
When I spoke to my VW Service Dept about updates etc, I was assured that at every service I would have my ECU updated and any other updates installed FOC as a complementary gesture to me. I can even have my cornering lights activated FOC. Pinch of salt?

Genuine leads are approx £250. I got mine for £175 :smug:
You can't to ECU updates with VCDS though. Need a different lead and software altogether

I got mine from Gendan, excellent support too. Also found out today it could read the OBD-2 info from a Honda Accord 2006, as VCDS seems to be able to read OBD-2 info aswell. Unfortunatly OBD-2 is limited and looks like it was designed for emission related stuff only.

True Snoopy and there is V-Tech (http://www.v-techuk.com/english/products/diagnostics/vagcom/index.asp) and VCDS.IE (http://www.v-techuk.com/english/products/diagnostics/vagcom/index.asp) but they don't show prices. The cheapest place in the UK is where I had mine from Ilexa £264.14 but their forum is crap. Oh that was the old VAT price before Christmas.
-
I listed what was on Ross-Techs website
I got mine before chrismas from Marshals as i wanted a plastic case with mine.
