Title: Vancouvers are on their way!
Post by: Buck on 14 February 2011, 23:49
Got a call today from my VW dealer to say they've finally got me a set of Vancouver 18s in to swap with my standard shadows

This was part of the original deal when buying the car as I thought the alloys didn't add to the cars looks. It's only taken 5 months as they haven't had a set come in since and i was beginning to doubt id ever get them  sales guy ive been dealing with has been spot on and the new ones have only covered 6k and he tells me are 'mint' which is just what I wanted.

Tyres on my current alloys only have a couple of thousand miles left in them so a good time to change!

Off down this week to do the swap

LOVE the Vancouvers!
Is your GTD 5 or 3 door Adrian?
Could you post some pictures up as I'll be getting some for mine when I have the pennies :)

They're my favourite wheels, and I have them too, but I drove a Bluemotion the other week (on sixteens I believe) and just kept thinking "How lovely and comfy this is!"

DDg - I know what you mean re the ride  but sometimes you've just got to sacrifice the odd thing or two to get what you want!

Car looks beautiful. Lovely picture.
Are those 17" Seattle Shadows? They look great too IMO.

Hi Asker

Yes they are.

They look "OK" on the black car and have got used to them but still prefer the Vancouvers for the overall look of the car - I think they look classier and also being 18s will fill those arches a little more.

They were probably going to do the old salesman trick of just ordering a car with a set on and swop yours onto the new car, then they hit a slight snag

Well, he has now moved just across the border from Seattle, USA to Vancouver, Canada in pursuit of Gizzy.
Could be a bumpy ride.

If I'd ordered my car I'd have had the wheel upgrade as I like the charlestons and didn't really like the standard wheels, but after living with the standard wheels I like them a lot, they never look dirty and the ride is great

I really like them very much. Good in looks and even better as a ride. 17" is big enough for the UK IMO. I've got 18" and they suck.

Thanks Steve.

I love the GTD. As a Golf I think the package is very good (although I would have like a few more toys/better spec). The engine is a very good diesel. Yes it's an oil burner and a different car to the GTi but it has tonnes of power and particularly mid range torque.

Just driven down to the dealers for the swap over and average 51MPG and thats using the outside lane most of the way on the M1

You of the same view?
Title: Re: Vancouvers are on their way!

I think the painted/polished wheels are ok - probably suited to a White car but I was never happy with the overall look of the car. I'd seen a couple with the Vancouvers on when looking to buy and for me the car looks more complete - probably helped by the slightly larger rim size.

All IMHO of course.

I don't mind the Seattles, I really like the Vancouvers but I loooooooooove the Charleston Shadows.
I nearly threw in the towel and traded the GTI for a GTD last year when they were announced (not that nearly really, but was tempted).

Next car for me (pipe dream really as the GTI is staying for ever) would be 5 door GTD in any colour you like, DSG and Charleston Shadows.  Re-map, RNS and Bobs yer Mums cousin twice removed.
Or an ED35, or an R, or, or, or.........anything really......

Well I'm at the garage now

New wheels are in perfect condition. Tyres like new. Just got to see them on my car and test drive them home

Well I'm home and the alloys do look sweeet!

They are mint in condition with no marks or scratches - I was like a hawk in the garage before they swapped them over - I'll be removing them in the next week or so and giving them a deep clean before I seal them with some gtechniq C5 which will mean they will stay clean so much more easily.

On the journey home (city / Motorway / Country Roads) I didn't notice any degradation in ride quality despite these being 18s rather than the 17 Seattles - perhaps its because these have more rubber on them compared to the ones I swapped  If anything I (imagined) an improvement

I managed to grab a quick shot (well it's a 30 sec exposure!) excuse the dirty car etc. Will take a better shot in the near future

Shortly before i ordered my GTI i saw a DBP GTD with Vancouvers at a dealer and it looked fantastic! i was very tempted for a little while but don't really do the miles for a diesel to make sense. Good choice Buck!

They look mint I must say..Great Pic too with the lighting.  Still think I prefer the Vancouvers, but that's probably because I've got a little bored with the Charleston's after having them on my MK5 GT Sport for the last 3 years.  Very nice indeed, looks like a great swap over the shadows.

Well after owning an ED30, i thought i would hate the diesel engine, only took me about a week to get used to it. Would i buy another GTD yes i would no problem, and i'm hoping the next one is twin turbo, we live in hope?

The DSG is ace with diesel too sounds lovely.

I've never actually been fortunate enough to hear the GTD as a DSG.  Does it come with the same characteristics i.e. pop on Gear change as the GTI DSG?  Any good You Tube links?  I got bored searching!

Doesn't pop like a petrol no, but crip, clean, mega fast gear changes.

The DSG 'box in these cars is the best yet, they even creep on the Brake like a conventional auto now making them much easier to manoeuvre into tight parking spaces etc.

Noise wise I find passengers always say they like the noise from the engine when you give it some too

Cheers fellas

The GTD DSG I drove was an animal - it was so responsive it was something different!

I read before I bought the GTD that it is the first enging that they have been able to acoustically tune to deliver a 'sporty note' to the diesel rather than the traditional rattle and hum

I can vouch on the manual that it does have a sporty edge when under acceleration and at idle whilst still a diesel doesn't sounds as rattly as my previous VAG cars.

The sporty "non-diesel" sound is great, love it.
Little known fact that 5 of the legs of the vancouvers are polished. the raised legs.

The problem with the Vancouvers are they are diamond cut like the Monzas.

When I hit a kerb I was told by a few local places that the cost to fix would be around £120 but because they were diamond cut the finish wouldn't be the same as the other wheels. Although to be honest I don't think it would be that noticeable.
Unfortunately I ended up buying a new wheel from VW

Monza Shadows are approx £450 inc VAT so the Vancouvers, which are slightly cheaper, would probably be approx £400 inc VAT. So really expensive.

p3asa probably has an exact cost.

PS there was a Vancouver sold on eBay a week or two ago for about £60.

I'm sure they were £420 from the dealer but I was given 25% off as I bought the car there. £340 rings a bell for the final cost.

I'd only had the car for a couple of days when a dog ran out and I had to mount a small island to avoid it.

If it happened now I think I would just spend the £340 on a new set of alloys.

Thanks Buck, god its so painful when u kerb your alloys. Dosh is tight at the moment so will live with it for a while

That company I mentioned, well I got it's name slightly wrong! It is www.lepsons.com

Could be worth asking them. They do very good work. Not cheap but nowhere near the cost of a wheel.
