Could be any one, does it increase with revs.

I would start with checking your alternator and cam belt tensioner.
-
Agreed with Wayne, good advice.
-
Ok will do. I need to replace the alternator anyway as mine in cracked all the way through on the braket bit.
-
Change the gearbox oil (VW), and check condition of gearbox engine mount too. Won't solve it, but made it quieter on mine.

That would cause a whiney noise!

Mine whines, sounds like a supercharger!
On mine it's the cambelt tensioner

Hey, it's psychological!

ok great cheers will replace alternator and gearbox oil when i get a chance.
what should i look for when checking gearbox engine mount. also is that the one at front next to starter motor?
-
a gearbox mount wont stop the whine, in my opinion neither will new oil. Been there done that. :undecided:
-
no, I mean the one at the back engine bay, passenger side. (so right hand rear as you look in the bay)
>a gearbox mount wont stop the whine, in my opinion neither will new oil
no it won't but old oil and a knackered mount didn't help mine not-whine.

got same prob with mine. the gearbox mount (if fecked) would have brown oil all over it
