Title: mk3 gearbox query
Post by: mark1963 on 14 February 2011, 17:11
i have been looking for a replacement gearbox for my 1998 'R' reg golf.
i have found a box from a 1996 2.0 8v on ebay.mine is a 2.0 8v too.
can i consider that this will fit my car too?
i have asked for codes but he says he cannot read them on the box.

get the box code off it before you buy though, even if last car it came out of a 2.0 8v it might have been changed before that for something else.

its on the flat plate on the bottom o the bell housing, one mk3 box code off top o my head is CHE

you can never be sure without the box code. it could have been replaced with anything in the past! its not dificult to read its stamped clearly into the flat plate on the bottom of the bell housing. if he is reluctant then that suggests he knows what he si selling isnt what he is sellign if you know what I mean. or he could just be a lazy git

thanks so far.given up on the gearbox and have found a gti box (87000 miles).has given me code of
the only thing im worried about is that the guy who scrapped car said to him the following;
'' said it had no grinding issues but did have some selecting problem but he thought it was just to do with the external selector'' what do you think this means? the guy selling has taken the casing chamber off to look inside and cant see any recognisable problems i.e chewed up teeth etc..,.
do you think its worth the 'punt' for £50?  :smiley:
