Title: vw health check questions - no luck with search

wondering if anyone has ever had one done.  my invoice says

both rear struts in poor condition - would they mean the shock absorber or the top mount parts?
both front springs dont fit - this baffles me? they didnt pick up on it 6 months ago
play in both front top mounts - why would this be? i upgraded to febi G60 units 3-4 months ago

im learning as i go as far as repairs go so i apologise for any 'stupid questions'

This is a vehicle check done at your local dealer?

'rear struts in poor condition'- probably means the shocks, they may be leaking, or not damping things as they should. Easily replaced and not too expensive.

front srpings dont fit' - duno, are they lowering springs, have you changed them in your ownership?

play in front mounts'- could be if youve done heavy miles, and the parts were a poor quality, but it would be surpising.... Who fitted them, chack its not simply a loose nut (or special nut below the top cap)

May be worth speaking to those who did the check and asking for more details.

thanks for the reply

the check was done as the local dealer. and it does have lowering springs with non standard shocks on, previous owner couldnt tell me anything about them tho. they look like 60mm lowering springs

the car is a 1998, and has covered just over 106k, the top mounts were fitted for an MOT by the mechanic doing the parts.  could the wrong size springs cause play in the top mounts? if so im thinking i might get some 40 mm springs as a temporary fix until i can afford some coilovers

I used to have a 60mm apex lowering kit.. When one of the front shocks went I replaced with some spax ones, though they had  much longer shafts so the spring rattled in the shock when not preloaded. Wasn't a prob with the car on the ground, but jack it up and the spring was loose.. Wonder if this is the case with yours? How much do vw charge for a health check just out of interest??

ahhh yeah! u might be onto something! when i did the wheel bearing and cv joint a couple of weeks ago, there was loads of play in the spring when it was jacked up! so i may have nothing to worry about there.

health check was free  :cool:
