Well, today I tried sourcing the leak I have in the boot. Whilst I locked myself in there with the tailgate plastic cover off, my mum poured water over the rear.
I noticed very large amounts of water coming in through the rear lock barrel. Not the barrel itself, but the plastic cylinder it goes in.
That cylinder also has a lot of play it in, it leads me to believe maybe a gasket or something has broken off...
Any ideas if the rear lock should allow water in, and if the rear lock should move about a lot?
-
the black push button thing which houses the lock barrel has some sort of gasket/sticker thing where it attaches the thing to the actual boot

I think it does have a gasket actually, however the plastic cylinder doesn't get pushed out all the way, making it water tight. I think I'm going to change that lock soon as it's seen better days.
-
i would change the whole button and lock if you can and//or put a bit of sealent round the gasket area too

Yup that's what I'll do. Cheers Kells :afro:

They have a felt type washer as standard from memory.

I see. The seal in there now I think is rubber, but not 100% sure. I'll have a mooch around the scrapyard and see if any have felt washers or bigger gaskets?
-
mines like rubber, id try the silicone route personally

Or make a seal out of a thin piece of rubber (old inner tube would do)

Water is coming in not only through the rectangular shaped lock, but also through the cylinder where the barrel goes in. That cylinder doesn't get pushed out all the way.
Know what I mean?
-
Unbolt the handle (inside the tailgate 2 bolts from memory), put a thin bead of silicone and then refit onto the sealant and that should stop it, worked on mine.
-
What handle?
You mean the tailgate trim? Yeah all that came off to reveal the inside of the lock.

The push button bit, is bolted on

Oh right yeah I know, with the long plastic thing above the number plate. Not thought about how I'm gonna get it off, the bolts are rusted in!

Pair of pilers on the inside of the bolt, the push button bit bolts to the inside of the tailgate btw.

Does it? I didn't see any bolts around the area on the inside. I'll have a look during the week, see how it goes.

Well it is not part of the long handle, I know that from when I fitted my cl one, when I looked the push button release had 2 bolts holding it on from inside.
-
I'm on about the boot lock wayne, not handles

Yes and I as said that bolts on but from inside the tailgate, pop the inner cover off and you will see.

Will see tomorrow

there are 3 seals, a felt like seal between the plastic button and the tailgate, which for some reason isnt listed as a replacement part for mk3, need to buy the entire lock?
and 2 round thin washer type seals between the lock and the plastic button, and between the rear clip and the lock cylinder:
111 837 227 B - seal between lock and button - 1.55+VAT
N 900 989 01 - seal between circlip and lock - 0.71+VAT
-
Nice one John!
I'll get hold of them and I'll get my girlfriend to make me a washer out of felt. She's doing fashion/clothes designer course at uni
-
What's the part number for the rectangular seal? It's not labelled
-
isnt that the one i mentioned already? if so its not available on its own, which is bloody stupid if you ask me

I may have to put a load of sealant then

Got a pic of the inside.
Right, this is the lock without being pushed out....

And this is the lock being pushed out (as it should)

On the first pic you car see the O-ring is not sealing the lock. On the second pic, when I'm pushing it up, it seals it. I feel like there should be a spring somewhere, pushing the lock outwards...
This is the outside view
As it is

ah, that would be the springs inside the boot button are fecked. get to the scrappy, steal a complete boot button. pop the old lock cylinder out of yours, rebuild it and swap over. need a cl one if yours is though, i believe they are different
