feedback from you men with kids and prams aswell that fit well in the MK6 ? ha ha ha
-
Full marks so far for not being one of those bores who comes along and says ''I need a bigger car because the pram I want won't fit into the Golf''
Can't give you any recommendations as my eldest is now taller than me so won't fit into a babyseat any more.

If anything Andy , i would have to get a 4 door mate but even that would be a Golf !!

We used a maxi cosy baby carrier that locks into an isofix base, works well and is very safe.
Max now uses a maxi cosy car seat that's described as the Sherman tank of baby seats - it's very safe and comfy too.
I can't wait for your new arrival Steve
We use the golf from time to time and the boot is a good size for prams and all of the other stuff :-)
You can borrow the isofix base if you like as we won't be using it again for a few years, I'd offer the carrier too but it's not "as new"

Actually 3 doors are easier when they are very small, you can perfect a movement which involves ducking, swinging yourself and young 'un into the car whilst perching your derriere onto the back of the folded seat putting you in a perfect position to do up straps easily. :smiley

Well done!
Isofix all the way, kiddicare.co.uk is a good place to get stuff from.
If you like cows this one is for you

Agree with the others - maxi cosi and definately maxi cosi isofix base, the best £100 we spent! Beware of crap imitations i.e mamas and papas base!
-
i dont have a kid but my nephew rides in a maxi cosy... i understand its the best
-
Yep Maxi Cosi all the way :)
-
Pram wise we have a Bugaboo chameleon which fits very well in the boot with plenty of space to spare
-
Personally went for the Recaro profi when Liah was first born has it has better side protection than most at the time,
She now has the Recaro young sport which again has a very good side protection and can be bought for either isofix or the cars 3 point seatbelt system.

To start with you are better off with a travel system. Something like this http://www.kiddicare.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/productdisplayA_54_10751_-1_14601_125432_10001_
The baby goes in the carrier which either fits into the car seat base, pushchair or supermarket trolly. You don't have to keep getting them unstrapped from one thing to another, just unclick the carrier and off you go. This will do all you need until they are big enough to go in a forward facing seat.
As for 3 doors being easier, just remember the doors are longer and more easily knocked into the car in the next space by the womans fatter arse.
-
I bet the other Golf GTI Mk owners would laugh their nuts off looking at us talking about prams and car seats
Us Mk6ers are so rock and roll
Britax ftw

Thanks for the link , but have you tried the stuff there dubber? :undecided:

We have bought quite a bit of stuff from Kiddicare and found them really good.
I can't remember the name of the system we had (it was 7 years ago) but it was similar to the one in my link.
We went to Mothercare and similar places to look at stuff, then bought them online from Kiddicare.

Well we had a bit of a shock yesterday to find that my wife is expecting twins.....with a 2.5 yr old as well I think the golfs days may be numbered. Not clear exactly what the law is but with 2 baby seats not sure what is available for the toddler that will fit safely (and legally) in the middle. Read something about him being able to be strapped in normally but if he is older than 3 but not sure about that......MPV or 4x4 methinks! Have Mazda 6 estate too but can't afford to sell it and it will also have the same problem with the middle seats!
LOADS to think about - been in shock all day as no twin history in my wifes family!

OMG
That'll be a bit of a change then!
I think you're right re seating. You'll either need to get a wider car such as A6 that can take 3 across or some kind of people carrier (as a second car of course, keeping the VW)
Work colleague has just picked up a Ford S-Max. Must say it's a lot of car for the money. Buy one 2nd hand and it'll be a steal)
good luck and health to you and your good lady.

Very well done that man!

I'd never buy a second hand safety seat for my child Linky: http://www.which.co.uk/baby-and-child/nursery-and-feeding/guides/where-to-buy-baby-equipment-second-hand/safety-issues/

Congratulations mate
We had twins with our eldest just over 3 when we found out.
2 baby seats at either side in the back and a booster cushion for my oldest in the middle. It worked out fine. In fact if anything the 2 baby seats acted like supports for my eldest in the middle.
To be honest a MPV or 4x4 wouldn't give you significantly more room in the back. You would have to go up to 7 or 8 seats to get more room.
The biggest problem was carrying the pram. The Mrs insisted we get one of those Silver Cross double prams and they are big buggers.
So I got rid of my new Ford Escort and bought a Montego Estate from the auction for a couple of hundred quid. Not my first choice of car but it was a brilliant carthorse and I didn't care what happened to it, what with squeezing baby seats in and out all the time.
Can't you get by using the Mazda estate for the kids as there will be plenty of room in that? It is only for a few years until they can all sit on boosters. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4781511.stm
Since I bought at the auctions I kind of realised buying a car is all relative.
Pay over £20k and you expect it to be spotless, faultless and you generally worry about where you park it etc.
Pay a couple of hundred and you actually enjoy the rattles and squeaks and you don't care as much leaving it in a tight space.
Good luck

I'd never buy a second hand safety seat for my child Linky: http://www.which.co.uk/baby-and-child/nursery-and-feeding/guides/where-to-buy-baby-equipment-second-hand/safety-issues/
But would you buy a second-hand Ford S-Max? Which, I think, is what Buck meant.

Lol, your only right mate I'll change it - I'd never buy a second hand ford for my baby

If you want to stay in the VW club whatabout a high spec Touran or a Sharan?

So OT on a so OT thread, which makes this post perfect!
I think.

Sorry for the misunderstanding Buck :embarassed:

Thanks all for the good wishes! Well, its just about sinking in now and the car dilemma is foremost in my mind (don't tell Mrs Doddy!). I'm not going to rush - still time to enjoy the golf but I will have to be sensible so it will be going one way or another. I have no finance on it but do i trade for similar value MPV/4x4 type or as suggested by p3asa sell the golf and buy a cheaper workhorse and save the cash? I think I can manage with the Mazda most of the time but will pop into Halfords and ask car seat fitter for advice.
All my family are in Scotland so I need something that can safely and comfortably get us (and the lab!) up there. Much as I want to stay with VW not sure about the Touran - looks a bit dull inside and out and high spec ones not cheap and few and far between. Fear I do need to go for 7 seater though for kids friends, family etc so S Max, Pug 5008, etc may need to be considered? Would like a Disco 3 but still expensive and would have to be a basic high miler 5 year old to match value of golf as far as I can see.
Decisions decisions and haven't even considered double buggies etc!
-
Disco 3's are epic mate, we have one as our family car, it can do everything anywhere no matter what the weather
-
I know they are very good, never driven one though. Just looking at them on Landrover Used site and actually could get younger than i thought probably. Would you suggest trading/swapping golf for similar value or selling golf privately? I guess any garage would be happy with decent GTI on forecourt?
-
To be fair this time of year land rovers and all 4x4's are at a premium, if you can wait a little bit you should see prices coming down as spring approaches which is also when cars start selling again so you'll be in a win win situation.
If you can buy your car from a Land Rover main dealer as you'll get a years extra warranty that's worth it's weight in gold.
I have quite a lot of experience with Land Rovers so please feel free to ask any questions
Ours is a '58 2009MY run out version so it's quite nice for a Land Rover, the last one we owned had covered 97,000 miles and was still in great condition and had never let us down, I only changed as I was offered the one we have now at a very very good price.
MPG wise they'll do 25 around town rush hour or upto 32 on the motorway - more it you take it easy.
Tax is 400 odd quid but you'll be glad for it in the winter!
Servicing is reasonable if you get your stealer to price match the best price you can get from your local indi but it is every 12 months or 15,000 miles.
Interior space is vast full stop.
-
Imagine my situation at present:
3 grandkids in the past 7 years, ages approx 6, 4, 2.5, their mum and dad in my GTI. I am grateful I have an ex-wife with the Merc, and the mother of the kids is tiny though the father is very large. Four in the back and two in the front. The kids won't be seperated. Bloody crowded and every journey becomes hell on earth.
I just wish they had used some effective contraception. Do I need to buy a bigger vehicle? NO for now. I have made sure the former is in force. I was there to make sure.
They are still waiting to get their Golf. Ordered June 2010, expected delivery June 2011. VW are not making our lives very easy.
On that bombshell, I gracefully depart from this thread.
-
How'd you get 4 in the back
My good lady tried to pry me away from a normal car and into a family lugging bus - just in case the in laws wanted to come out for the day with us - yep right I'll ruin my driving enjoyment for those two weekends a year then??!
We have been able to get me, SWMBO, my mum and both boys in the Golf relatively easily - something we couldn't do in the A4 but 4 in the back Asker?!?!

Well, we just break/bend the law, with the youngest on the mother's lap and strapped.
Nice having tinted rear windows.

What the law don't see, the law don't know

6 weeks and counting to baby Scotsgolfer is due and I've been trawling through the same types of issues that Steve30 raised in the original part of his post.
After "road testing" several travel systems we've plumped for a Maxi Cosi one that contains an Isofix car seat base that remains in the car and the Infant Carrier that plugs in and out of the base. Similiar in type to the ones the Doc posted links to earlier.
Anyway I was trying it out yesterday and all looks well. The only thing that worries me is that the isofix base might damage the leather on the back seat for the 12 months or so that it will be installed. Did any of you experienced Dads have such a problem? I'm guessing that a rubber or carpet matt underneath the base might be an idea but wondered if anyone had any other bright ideas/experiences.
Before you say it - I did originally spec cloth seats, but a VW miss-build of missbuilds added leather at no extra cost.
-
A blanket or sheet on the back seat will do the trick. Handy item for absorbing sick too, you just need to whizz it out and chuck it in the washing machine.
Sounds horrible but you'll soon be getting very familiar with sick!!!

A good idea

You can buy a seat protector from Mothercare (used to anyway!) that is semi-rigid and spreads the load across more of the sea and reduces the risk of having dents/marks in your seats.
Particularly important when you use the isofix as these lock in very tight
-
How long now then Steve?

How long now then Steve?
She's in the middle of the 37th week , so couple more weeks yet Doc due date is 9/04/11??? Looking good now
I just bought the Cybex car seat withe isofix base very pleased ,fits in brilliantly.
-
Good call folks - I'll check out Mothercare and see what they've got on our next weekly trip there! Failing that the blanket/ towel idea sounds just dandy. I'm predicting very good financial results for MC in 2011 at this rate. It'll get worse before it gets better I'm told. I'll be driving a Punto in a few years time if this outlay continues!
Best wishes Steve30, we're running just a bit behind in theory - 23 April. Antenatal classes tonight - Yikes!

2011's going to be good for you ;-)
