Hi guys (and any dolls),
Been reading this forum for a while - just love the wealth of information on here!
I'm considering bringing my LHD Superchipped GTI back to the UK later this year (can't bear to part with her!). What would I need to do it to register it for UK roads? Any idea of what these conversions would cost? Also would servicing at VW dealers be an issue re parts etc.?
Cheers and thanks upfront,
CardinalC
PS. First red car. And indeed they are quicker!

Hello and welcome.
Are you a real Cardinal? Best watch my mouth if you are!!!
Your car would need to be able to pass a UK MOT to be able to be registered here. That means the headlights would have to dip in the correct direction and other such UK specific niceties.
Have a look on the DVLA website for current regulations and how to go about registering a car here, it shouldn't be too much of a problem spec wise apart from the headlights. Don't mention the superchipping though!!
Servicing wouldn't be a problem as once VW have your chassis number they will be able to order in parts accordingly. It's only the failure of specific LHD parts that will cause any delays. The car would have to be registered with VW UK and you may have to argue about warranties and the like, I think they will only honour the first 2 years. After that you can whizz off to find a cheaper and more reliable independant specialist.

Hello and welcome to the MK6 section of the forum.
How old is your car and what version is it ie MK5 / MK6 etc?

RHD headlamps (if its got xenons that's just a bit of reprogramming), rear fog/reverse lamp swap and reprogramming the computer to display mph should see you get through an MOT.
Everything else you need to know if here http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/ImportingAndExportingAVehicle/index.htm (http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/ImportingAndExportingAVehicle/index.htm)

Thanks for the warm welcome. Appreciate the advice and link.
Only a Cardinal at the weekends, so it shouldn't get in the way!
Car is a Mk6 GTI DSG with SC Stage 1 (Bluefin) and Pipercross panel filter. Totally transformed the car, much smoother - would most definitely recommend. Great service from SC.
Headlights are non-Xenon. Would you advise replacing with Xenons or not (I've no idea of relative prices of Xenons versus conventionals)? And what of the speedo - it's only in kms - would I need a mph replacement?
Thanks again.

Xenons are the way forward
Speedo you can get a set of UK clocks and swap the dial over - its easy to do if your me, happy to help you with that one of you need help ;-)
Headlamps - there will be loads of RHD halogens for sale here soon ;-)

Sure I read that option was in the MFD so you could change it no problem if you went abroad?!? Or have I imagined that?

I'm sure that it's an internal lever on xenon's to use the "abroad", the halogens need stickers on the outside.

A belated WELCOME. We need to prey a bit more on Sundays, so your arrival is timely.
You can buy my perfect Halogens with Philips X-treme Vision H7 bulbs at an attractive price, so I may see the light. Please, perform your duty as a man of the cloth, at least towards this ageing and shameless sinner. :embarassed:

Are you sure you could live with lhd in the uk as you might better to sell up and buy in the uk, reselling a lhd car in gb will not be easy.
-
Welcome!
Remember that putting Xenons onto a car without Xenons as standard can be classed as an MOT failure in 2011/2012 :afro:
You need the necessary additional equipment like auto levellers and headlight washers to get away with it :)

LHD cars very useful for kerb crawling Wayne.
Off topic (but we're on the second page now so it must be okay!! ), a few years ago when the pound vs the Euro was at extremely good exchange rates and everyone was shooting off abroad to buy their brand new cars (this was when all these discount brokers appeared), it also became popular to import mint low mileage original shape M3s and Golf G60s, I know of a guy who bought a Golf G60 from Germany to sell on for a profit.
He got the car back into his home town late at night after driving it back from Germany, so last port of call was for some food before bed. He pulled into our local Maccy Ds and immediately realised that the intercom was then on the passenger side, he had no passenger, and the windows were manual winders. He was stuck, couldn't order so had to drive round the building and then reverse through the drive through section to make his order.

Thanks Doc – I may take you up on your kind offer should I decide to bring her back.
am1w – it’s never too late to repent and there’s no better soul cleanser than charity. Of course it doesn’t have to start with your home, we could begin with your perfect halogens and bulbs. You can leave them by the donation box on your way out if you wish!
Wayne – thought of that but my 10k km 2010 car is worth less than two thirds of what it would be worth in the UK (in keeping with the comparatively low initial purchase price). I’d run it for four or five years then trade it in once the gap between RHD and LHD prices has narrowed. Only issue I’ve found with LHDs in the UK is with car park payments. Just need to make sure you have a passenger on those trips. So the decision is really made on the costs to import and ‘convert’ for UK roads.
Steve30 and Exonian – many thanks for the welcome.

You'll have to convert me first before you lay your hands on my Halogems for free. :lipsrsealed:

Watch out your worship, once Der Doc gets hold of you he'll be persuading you to do a full LHD to RHD conversion, steering column, dash, door cards, wiring loom, the works!!!
