Title: Cutting Out, tried loads. Looking for sale if this fails.
Post by: Chew22 on 13 February 2011, 15:05
My car very intermittently cuts out. It doesnt splutter, it just conks out and wont restart for between 15 seconds to 10 mins. I can tell the car is going to restart as I can hear the fuel pump turn on.

So far I have tried:

Crank sensor (fixed stutterly cut out problem when hot perfectly)
Trottle body clean.
Fuel Relay
Aftermarket immobilser disabled.
Full service.

I am going to get a ECU relay tomorrow lunch time (if in stock) and if that doesnt work I'm going to have to give up and I dont have the money or mental strength anymore.

The car for 99.9999% of the time drives perfectly. I have invested so much money and time into this car I absolutly love it, but I can't fix it anymore :'(

Full respray of a Colour Concept, soo many parts changed. Coilovers fitted etc

Below is my thread on rebuilding it. It looks absolutly stunning for a Mk3 GTI

Any other tips appreciated of course.

Thanks

Don't give up on it ole chap.. go for the ecu relay next as you say, you never know! only about a tenner, a good thing to do and eliminate anyway.

You know how it is, you see a bargain, but after a while it becomes less and less of a good deal.

I've grown to really like the yellow. When it's all waxed up, expectially with the new paint it looks amazing. After the relay I'm quite stumped for what to try next

:(

Was yours a sputtery cut out, or an instant cut out?

I know exactly how it is.. but try not to give up now you've come this far, see what happens with the relay then take it from there.
At a longshot but worth doing anyway for piece of mind/general servicing you could replace the fuel filter, again not expensive and not difficult, it could be a fuel starvation thing you never know..

Incidently.. i've just bought a classic 2stroke late 70's motorcycle..colour-Yellow! always wanted one and so..Yep great colour i think ;)

Fuel filter already changed haha.

I believe it to be something electrical, as there is sometimes a chance that when I turn the key, I dont hear the fuel pump come on, which makes a kinda of 'ERRRR' noice.

If i sat in the car a tried turning the key over and over (with a 20 second gap to alow the fuel pump to turn off again) 1 in 20 wont hum.

Really hoping this is relay is the cause here.

It could well be the relay so fingers crossed eh..but if it isn't..still don't give up ;)  has to be something you haven't checked yet otherwise..

Is this likely to be as intermittent as once per day? And a dead cut out without spluttering?

Any tests I can do?
