Title: noise from gti
Post by: adamfbb on 12 February 2011, 12:52
Hi there

Bought a mk5 GTi a few days ago and there is a rattling/ticking noise from it when idle.
Any ideas?

Thanks, Adam

It all adds to the character of the car, as does the oil consumption when you cane it.

do you think replacing the chain tensioner (not cambelt) would help, what sort of cost involved?

If i found one at the breakers, would it need to be the axx or can i get one from another engine code?

........''yes'' it would mate, had it done on my last 05 GTI AXX engine code. I had it done under a warranty claim, mine did tick BUT it was a lot louder than normal & it was the chain & tensioner that needed replaicing.

The noise is doing my head in, I'm going to see how much it cost, found a one on a engine but guy wants 1300 for the whole engine, don't want to sell the tensioner chain on its own, if anyone can assist on where I can buy the chain and get it changed over, your help is always appreciated, always.

Thanks

.......parts came from main dealer mate. Think in total bill was around 450.00 quid touch  but as before pushed for it under a warranty claim as the cam chain had become very slack & could be pulled off the drive gears !!!!!.

hi there hmeah,

did you get this sorted out? Very interested to know as I have the same problem. Does the noise on your only become apparent at idle, and only after the enigne has warmed up?

friends first thought the car was a diesel because of the noise it makes. They were surprised to find out it is petrol powered

yes, but the car should not sound like a diesel...many do but this is not the way they left the factory...
