Title: Flexible radiator hose?
Post by: emery1990 on 12 February 2011, 10:02
Is there a more flexible hose on the market for rads? The 8v gti one I got for mine, is not doing the job and is cracking already where it has been forced on.

It wasn't from German Swedish was it? I remember buying one from there and it was noticeably harder than the VAG ones. Cracked within 6 months.

Get a genuine one. More flexible and cheaper in the long run.

Not sure, I got it from gsf ? Joining onto the engine spout it was slight kinked aswell, so thinking of trying a hose from a different engine.

GSF = German Swedish French, I got a bottom rad hose from them and it was a gnats to short but i jubilee clipped it on anyway, took me forever to trace the fact it was that that was leaking. Go original if you can, not too expensive for rad hoses.

LOl never knew it was stood for that!. Yer I'll pop down to Vw, if it is softer rubber then it should do the trick. Just got it from gsf as thought itd probably be the same rubber anyway.

Iirc VW no longer supply Mk2 hoses, I had to find a similar shaped hose, and cut it to length,,, mine came from GSF about 5 years ago, and is still in perfect condition. though I could imagine that an ill fitting hose would not last long, if it had been over stretched...
It may also be worth checking the condition of engine mounts, just to make sure there is no excessive movement causing the hose to fail

Thats the problem, it doesnt fit right, it is slighty kinked at the engine side, Its because I have a mk2 gti 16v rad, but with an abf outlet spout, the top rad hose on from an 8v gti is soooo close, but just the angles are not enough.

Its not on the road atm. and cracked after bout a month lol

Bend a piece of coat hanger wire to the shape required, take it to GSF, and see if they can match it with anything, your looking for a longer section that can be cut to length, if you find something that fits perfectly, find out what car its for, so people know for future reference...
Also note that any cuts made to a hose, MUST be made on a straight section, and NEVER on a bend, cutting on a bend will reveal a cross section that is not circular, and will never fit properly!

Forum member foxyjay, nice bloke from near rugby. Popped round this morning and made me an offer.

Don't know what to get next, would LOVE another mk2 but I'm not really in the financial position to maintain one at the minute. If you see a tidy daily VAG car in our area for less than a grand with tax and mot then let me know

Tps do hoses don't they? I got 1 for my 1.3 engine a year or 2 ago. Was about 35quid though! It was a tee-piece with different diameter sections that couldnt be bodged with other hoses so I had to buy it!! Pretty sure you could still get exactly whatyour after though..

Ill just take the hose and see if theyve got a hose with slightly bigger angles, if not take it to the scrapyard and have a nose around there. Yer I wouldnt cut on a bend anyway, they seem to differ in shape slightly.

Was the samco hoses for a gti 16v though, or was it custom ? Got a 9A engine but with abf inlet manifold so spout is angled the other way, to the right if looking at it, instead of left.

I'll look on tps

I'd go for a silicone hose set, they look better they last longer and they fit properly, yes they are xpensive but ull probably never have to replace them again.

My hose needs to be custom so can't get silicone.
