Title: The Three Best 225/40 R18 92Y XL Summer tyres?
Post by: am1w on 10 February 2011, 17:26
These probably are:

Pirelli P Zero ................................... Available
Continental ContiSport 5P ..............    Still not available, though promised for release end of January
*Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2* .... Just been released and available in 225/40 R18 92Y XL

http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/Goodyear-Eagle-F1-Asymmetric-2-is-here.htm

The Goodyear seems quite an exciting product

Anyone about to replace their tyres should probably take this into consideration.

Not sure if this of any interest but:

I had PS3s fitted to my front 18" Vancouvers very recently and I'm convinced that I've actually lost a little steering 'feel.' It's hard for me to describe but I think they're slightly more 'vague' imediately around the straight ahead position; either that or they just move away from it more keenly. Does that make any sense to anyone? They grip very well and feel very secure in the wet, but there's definately a little less solidity about the steering when in a straight line and I don't feel quite as 100% connected as I did before (on the Potenzas that were factory originals).

Anyone else experienced similar - or am I losing it?

They are perhaps a little quieter than the Potenzas, but as they were well worn when I changed them it's hard to be sure. Lots of folk seem to dislike the Potenzas but I'm not sure I prefer the overal feel of these PS3s. Wet grip is probvably better though. The Bridges also lasted fairly well on the front of my diesel (35.5k) as i do lots of motorway journeys; but previous experience with Mich's tells me they last very well so will see if I can get upto 40K on em.

I just dont understand why everyone goes on about GYf1's , i thought they were crap TBH , yes they were great in the wet sure footed but did'nt last very long. Not the best all round tyre IMO, my next tyre for me will be vredestein sessanta

I fitted a pair of fronts today, replacement B/stones after 27k. Was going to go for P6000's but felt keeping the 'set' all the same the safest bet. I have no complaints with the standard tyres. The fronts I changed were absolutey shot to bits and in this weather become dangerous....

If i was going for a set of summer tyres, I'd try some P Zero Rosso's.

Assy's or the "V" groove ones mate? Having asked that I've only ever had them on RWD cars

I've heard nothing but good about those Sessanta's

JJH,
I agree with R32UK 100%. Don't even go there especially in the wet unless you are into banana skins.

I really am into my rim protection. Don't mock the afflicted.
Yeah, the Pearly tyres are great in drier warmer climates, but in the wet, one will gently slide into a kerb and use their rim protection for all it is worth. They wear out quicker than an Italian woman. Seen those mammas?
Regarding the Michey PS3s, about two months ago when I was at my dealership, a guy who had them on his GTI loved their wet grip but felt he had lost a bit of steering feel when compared to his Bridgestones.
I am getting more and more interested in the new Goodyears. Hope they come on the market soon. Be a bit pricey though but probably cheaper than the Michelin PS3s.

Asker is this going to be a 30 page thread about you rimming your tyres

LOL!
No it won't, you cheeky chappie, unless Doc keeps bringing it up.
Anyway, good protection keeps the Monza Shadows away from Sh!t and Polish.

i dont care what anyone tells me.. the bridgstones are SH!T. end of!!

I agree. Big time. They even wheelspin in turd gear in the dry.

Blackcircles price fully fitted for 4 x Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta sounds pretty reasonable @ £471.88
Can anyone comment on what the rim protection is like on these tyres?
Asker is great for rimming i'm sure he will be along very soon  How rude.

Gossa had these summer tyres and swore by them. He would know best. I have seen the Winter Verds (Neilgti and Ess_Three have these) and they have very good rim protection. The summer tyres should be just as good for this feature
The Micheys and Bridgestones have very good rim protection. The Continental ContiSport 3s, which are on the Merc, don't. She has managed to kerb the front wheels really badly.
Steve: Beware, as in my SMS.

Fairly decent.  I ran these on my MK4 and had one or two moments where I thought 'oh crap' but the the tyre saved them

Sadly they're not so much of a bargain as they used to be.  At one time you could get them for around £80 a corner!   IMO I found them as good as the Goodyear Assy's but with the added bonus of being quieter too

I had high hopes for the S001 - 20 years ago Bridgestone were at the top of their game with the legendary S01 and S02. I wonder what happened...

I bet the Contis will last longer than the Goodyears.

This is the First Review in 2011 for Maximum Performance Summer Tyres.
I am leaning towards the Goodyear more and more.

After kerbing my shadows last week rim protection has risen higher up my list of must haves in a new set of tyres.

Anyone have a view on great performance and good rim protection.

Cheers,

Jim

Hi Jim,
The Bridgestones 050s and Michelin PS3s have good rim protection. The Continental 3s not so good as we have these on the Merc. I don't know about the rest, but Goodyears always seem to be pretty good, I believe.

I would say the Michelin PS3s have bad rim protection, I kerbed a front last year and hardly touched the kerb

I've actually carefully measured the rim protection of the PS3s. It's very good and far better than the ContiSport 3s. The Bridgestone RE 050As are teeeny, weeny bit better than the PS3s.

Winter Contis off and Bridgestones back on today.

Kwik fit are now only charging £40 per season for tyre storage - not bad when you consider it would cost at least £20 to have them swapped over if you stored them at home. And no hassle, treated my wheels with the utmost respect again.

My front Bridgestones are about 50% worn, I'm definitely going for Continental when the time comes.
The Winter Contis got me out of a few 'situations' over the last few months, and they should be good for 3 or 4 years.
I'm a convert.

Bluefin back on after a few weeks. Now I remember why I like this car so much.

^^ near enough for me, Spring is in the air

I know the Protenzas aren't the best but the difference in feel/responsiveness is noticeable.

Anyway, going to do a full clean/polish/detail this weekend so wanted the summers back on for that.

Back on Topic:

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 in 225/40 R18 92Y XL BSW is now available from mytyres for approx £173.

(The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 in 225/45 R17 94Y XL BSW from mytyres is only approx £116 - LUCKY DOC!)

So, I am off to my tyre place soon to order these. As they have just been released, their price is a bit high. I presume, that in a couple of weeks, their price might drop a bit as the rest of the competition comes on stream.
