Post by: mark-mk3gti on 10 February 2011, 12:10
Previous owner had the textured bit and all arches colour coded, but its starting to come off in places, any ideas how to get it off? tried high pressure jet wash, which did get some off, but took ages and i got soaked, had a try at over cleaner on a bit off the car this morn, but didnt touch it after 25mins, but that was a factory painted bit, maybe try on the bit i need shut of?  heres a pic

+1 get a tiny bit of nitromorse on it and should come straight off :afro: don't get it on the none textured bits though!

Bear in mind that the thinners will strip every last bit of gloss and black out of the plastics so once you'e managed to rid them of all the paint id strongly advise to treat them with a decent bumper finishing product or some boiled linseed oil or you'll have really grey and streaky plastics which obviously look crap.

Have tried on a small section, and not very productive! Can't believe how well it's stuck on! Just doesn't wanna budge, think it is gonna be easier to spray it again! Lol,  unless I try nitromors aswell, thought it was just gonna rub off.. :(   what a pi$$er

Yeah was gonna use something on it after, but after this I think I'll paint over cos it's not wanting to part company, lol

It might be worth getting a hot air gun on it and giving it a gentle going over.

You WILL NOT get it all off without damaging the bumpers.

Yeah looks to be a tw@t to do, so gonna key it up with wirewool n scotchbrite and reprimer it and spray black to match the rub strips I did a while back, though will prob lacquer the bumpers, and then gotta do all the arch covers.

If you want to sort it with paint, it's going to need scuffing right up but not so hard that it looses the texture, plastic priming, 2 pack primer and then matte paint and if you wanted lacquer with 2 pack.

The EASIEST/cheapest way would be second hand bumpers if you can find some in good condition.

You often see decent looking bumpers on eBay for £20 - £30

5hrs today and looks like this now, just need to finish the grill off, thought while I was there I may aswell do that aswell! :) and all being well i should have hella quads aswell for the front..

Also need to do arches and rear bumper now.. :) never ending..

I know I  need to leave it a few days, but whats good for protecting it now it's painted? Just usual polish?

Cheers for all your help and suggestions. Hope it lasts! May have to put the full frontal bra on I got, but ideally need it lowering for that to look any good....

After 3-4 coats of primer

Close up, looks pretty good in most places, but are a few imperfections where couldn't get it smooth enuff, didn't wanna wreck the bobbles.....
