Title: Retro fit MDI?
Post by: DRC on 09 February 2011, 19:19
As per the title, I pick up my golf next week but it only has AUX in, surely the MDI connection must just be a loom that plugs into the quadlock connector instead of the AUX? Has anyone tried this, and maybe someone could get parts and prices for me, maybe a kind person that works for VW :p hehe.

I've seen a few "kits" for sale on ebay. I think they are a cable and a control box which can be fed through to the glovebox. A mate with a MK5 GTI has been looking at them.

Didnt the SE come with MDI then?

Yes ish, I can get them new from VW for around £140 if my memory serves me correctly.

Why not do a list of the mods you'd like and let's see what I can help you fit - I'll devote a day to your motor if you want

Hmmm, Evo this is strange, was the socket located anywhere else other then the arm rest? It's definitely the SE as it has rear electric windows etc? Could it be in the glovebox as the only socket in the armrest was the AUX and the MDI port seemed to have a blank plate over it?

You're a gent good sir :) The kits on ebay are like £50 with no reserve, when you say yes-ish, is there any coding required? My mum has the kit in her new GTI, if she doesn't want it, could I use that one? only difference is she had the RCD510 :)

On golf mk6 uk cars the only place mdi goes from factory is in armrest, you can specify rear electric windows on the s trim as a factory option.........

Pm me reg number and will check it out Tomoz for ya

So it has the aux socket on the armrest facing toward the front of the car? Lift up the armrest you should find the mdi which you can get either USB or iPod specific leads for.

I'll give the reg number tomorrow mate, not at home atm :)
Car comes up SE on insurance, we buy any car etc.
The AUX socket is inside the glove box, not outside?

The 3.5mm aux plug is just behind the handbrake and the mdi plug is inside the centre armrest.

That sounds like the after market option that you can spec on the Golf - not sure why yours hasn't got the "factory fitted one" which looks like this: -
