ajmoir36 - The pic shows the digital gear indicator what year and month is your GTD? I tried to get them to enable it on my Jan 2010 GTD but they say they couldn't. I said the spec quotes that all 2010 Golfs should have this feature. I've heard of 2009 models having it. They just say i must have an old dash. I'm not that bothered about it its just that its supposed to be there but it isn't.
-
I have a Vagcom maybe I will try and look to see if its in there, but maybe I need the SKU or code what ever for access to the clocks?
I have VCDS but I don't see any options for it, not that I've searched thoroughly though.
-
Hang on, how come this as started a new thread when I was quoting and replying to ajmoir36's picture in GTD MPG (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=176242.30)
Please delete this thread Mods?
Hang on The Doc has edited it I wonder why?
-
weird
-
You said it was off topic in your post so I split it up in the hope to get more answers for you
Shall I delete or put it in the MK6 section to get further advice?
-
I said it was off topic because the thread was talking about GTD MPG but ajmoir36 showed a picture of his MFD that was showing the digital gear indicator.
I don't mind if you move to the MK6 section if you think it will attract more interest.
Cheers Doc.
-
I hope you get the answers your looking for

It might be something to do with an ecu update?
My old 2009 golf gt tsi went in with engine probs and had the ecu updated. When I got it back there was the gear change info on the highline display.
-
Well when I asked about this feature they took it in the workshop and plugged in their diagnostic kit and nothing was found. The service receptionist had a look on his computer at all the mods and updates that could be done 380+ of them and we both had a read through them but there was nothing listed. They disconnected the battery to reset all settings but it still couldn't be found.
So if there is an update they didn't know about it.

Actually my clocks arn't any of the versions that can have staging 5K6 920 970 E
Staging feedback here:
Found in Adaptation (when supported). From the drop down list, choose Staging. Change to On and Save.
MkVI Instrument cluster - which one do you have?
Please update that thread with your info. It looks like the Golf / Jetta 5K6 920 870 D and 5K6 920 970 H will activate. Also note the 2009 Seat Leon with 1P0 920 850 B
Maybe thats something to do with it, i'll vagcom at the weekend to see if i can spot it aywhere.
-
Cheers ajmoir36 I shall have to have a look sometime.
-
Right had a quick look with the Vagcom, could not find anything to suggest turning on the change gear indicator in any module.
Although did find this I assume if I started the car it will display the gear number? or up/down.

Cheers, are you using the older Vagcom or VCDS or is that just a play on words?
-
Latest and greatest 10.6.3 VCDS, Vag com same thing really.
-
Yes they changed the name in May 2008. Its just that if people still call it VAG-COM then they could be using the older versions.

I use VCDS coz it's shorter
-
Wo hoo don't start I fight I don't mind. I suppose he is checking to see if I have the free'r version of Vagcom rather than the paid version of VCDS. I have the paid one as there are now 5 VAG cars in my family, so figured its worth buying it. Two mk5 Golfs, one mk6 Golf, one mk4 Bora and one Audi Estate.
Back to topic.
-
What's all this? Well have no trouble here
-
FFS you can't even get a good fight in here any more what's going on?!?!
I thought all versions of Vag.Com were free, it was just the lead you paid for?!

In a word, moderation I've heard that they're a right pair
All versions of vag com / vcds are free yes but as you quite rightly say the lead is payable but worth every penny
-
I take it the gear change thing in question is that annoying display that tells you when you should change gear?? :undecided:
I do have it on mine.... would love to get it taken off if possible!!

I agree, I've never needed an indicator to tell me to change gear!

A right pair of nice guys.
I find the indicator is in synchrony with my driving style only on a dead flat road. It is hopelessly optimistic when there is an incline of any kind or in traffic jams. Whether I follow it or not, makes little or no difference to fuel economy. Still, it is an interesting feature which is only partially useful.
But, I do keep looking at it constantly. :embarassed:
Basically, it is an indicator for those people who don't know their apples from their oranges. :lipsrsealed:

You wicked person.
Yesterday you promoted murder , today it is banning.
Gilly, are you the resurrected Kev? :undecided:
Back on topic:
What I cannot understand is that why some GTDs, all of which were released after the GTI and thereby all being much newer cars, don't have this indicator enabled? :undecided:
Are there also older GTIs that don't have this feature enabled?
-
-
mine is a 59 and does have this feature

I want into the dealers yesterday to get a litre of oil. I'm just coming to the end of the litre they gave me when I picked it up so 8.5k per litre isn't bad.
Anyway while I was there is asked them about this digital gear indicator again that they say they can't fix because it must be an old MFD. I said I've asked this question on a few forums and the replies back. My Nov 2009 Golf has this.
Garage rang today and told me that the gear change display can be done (theyd drawn a nlank yesterday and had to ring VW technical!) but will need a software update (ECU)
It might be something to do with an ecu update?
My old 2009 golf gt tsi went in with engine probs and had the ecu updated. When I got it back there was the gear change info on the highline display.
I asked if they is now an update available and he search through the computer and said no but I will go and have a word with the chief tech. He said no it was only fitted to the BlueMotion. He showed me all the options fitted to my car via the VIN number and there was nothing listed. I said replies on the forum say they asked their dealer about this option and they phoned Milton Keynes and there was a software update for this and as jamojdm says he took his in and when it came out he had this option. I just VW Stoke are a bunch of tossers.
While I was there I said I'm still not happy with the clutch pedal pulsating, show me another car that does the same if you say its common to that model. We found a new GTD in the lot and that did it very slightly but not as much as mine. The new GTD I tested last your didn't do it at all.
-
My update was done via VW Huddersfield if that helps?
-
Thanks Buck but I don't think its worth a trip to Huddersfield when we have Crewe Volkswagen (http://another [http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/retailers/00638) and Stafford Volkswagen (http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/retailers/00254) if I'm desperate I could try those first?
-
 I meant in terms of you getting your dealer to contact them....
-
Ok I'll mension it when I call in again, cheers.
-
Ok I took it back to the dealer this week to try and have it enabled again. I said I've asked this question on a few forums and users have said they took it in for a service and it came out with the digital gear indictor showing. Another user had his done at VW Huddersfield so there must be a fix. I took the pamphlet that showed the MY2010 GTD should have this. I asked them to ring VW Huddersfield but they wouldn't we have to follow VW procedures and do it their way.
I waited around for an hour then I saw the technician come in the service reception and started reading the pamphlet, I went over to them. He says no its only fitted the BlueMotion. I said no read page 6 its fitted to the GTD. He read it and said I wish I had read this earlier it would have saved alot of time. Again tossers on reception don't speak to the tech. He said we've disconnected the battery to reset everything but it still doesn't show. We've done a full scan and there is nothing wrong with the system settings. We've sent the scan report with the problem to VW and we will have to wait for the reply.
So they wasted an hour doing the exact same checks at they did last year when I first reported this problem. Because they had reset everything the DRLs were back on which I turned off again and the MFD settings weren't how I like them. I phoned them today to ask if they have had the report back from VW. They have and there is a software update to enable this so I've booked it in for next Wednesday to finally get this sorted. I will let you know if it works or they cock something else up while doing this?
-
Best of luck with it - fingers crossed you'll see better MPG if you use it
-
I doubt it Doc I will still drive like I always do I'm just curious what it will tell me plus it should be fitted to that model.
I did my monthly fill up the other day and my calc says its gone from 42mpg to 46.5mpg on the last fill up I'm driving it no differently than I've always drove it. So it must be loosening up a bit more now?
(http://www.fuelly.com/sig-uk/43490.png) (http://www.fuelly.com/driver/KeithUK/golf)
-
I think it will be loosening up, I'm on around 55-57 mpg if I drive keeping with the traffic urban and 75 mph on the motorway using cruise.
I've done nearly 13000 miles now - you?
-
8,800 miles.
-
They do seem to open up at around 10,000 miles
-
The warm weather makes a difference I am consistantly getting between 57 and 60mpg trip comp every day to and from work. nearly 21K now. Cant wait until next week when all the cars dissappear as its the holidays.
-
I think you have an exceptionally exceptional route as I know you drive "normally" too
-

So I'm told Doc.
-
Well I was at the dealers for an hour this morning and they now have enabled the digital gear indicator. I said if anyone else asks about this you know what to do. They said we still have to follow the VW procedure but we now know it can be done.
Ok trying this function on the 10 mile trip back from the dealer it obviously points up to the next gear most of the time. Now if you maul it in 5th at 1000rpm it doesn't indicate the down arrow to 4th unless you are on the overun? It does show 1st gear unless you travel in 1st for a while? It disappears when you dip the clutch to change gear which I suppose is the norm. It won't increase any fuel con because I know which gear it should be in. It shows the dot . and the gear if its ok it's just a novelty factor. Obviously the clock moves over to accommodate this novelty feature so does that leave enough room for the compass feature if you have satnav?
We all now know it can be enabled its anyone wants it on their MY2010 GTD so don't take any bull of the dealer?
-
It will also indicate to change down during a regen cycle so that the revs are over 1500rpms (will suggest 1st if the revs are below 1500 in 2nd and sometimes will suggest going up, which then places the revs two low and so it changes its mind and tells you to drop down).
It also changes the gear point based on throttle position too.
I think eco driving (light throttle) is, 2nd pretty much staight away
20-25mph - 3rd
30-35mph - 4th
35-40mph - 5th
45mph - 6th (although I have to admit I do 40 in 6th).
-
Mine shows 1st as soon as the clutch is out and says to change up at ~2000 rpm.
