hi folks, tonight i was giving my 99 1.8t gti a thrashing then noticed a smell of oil so pulled over, popped the bonnet and there was oil all around the passenger side of the engine and all over the top of the gearbox, then about 20 miles later i noticed the gearbox starting to whine in 1st 2nd and 3rd. but the oil apears to be coming from the block somewhere but cant pinpoint exactly where.
any ideas?! cheeeeeers

what it smells like will soon tell you if it's engine or gear oil
-
I would hazard a guess that the gearbox has leaked oil everywhere. Which I would also hazard a guess as driveshaft seals having given up the ghost.
As danny states though, what does the oil smell like?
-
smells like hydraulic oil. cheers
-
Sounds like gear oil then
-
ok yes its defo gear oil then. is there any common places it leaks from? its mainly sitting on the top of the box. furthest away from the engine, under the gear linkage area.

Diff may have thrown a rivet and made a new drain hole, in the diffcaseing somewhere, if there are no holes on the ouside pop the clucth cover plate below the enigne and see if oil is in there. ether way if it has poped a rivet it's f**ked
-
is the clutch cover plate the black plastic rectangle with a handle? hope it aint too trashed!
-
metal cover at the bottom between engine and box the lower section removes, if thats all full of oil the clutch is f**ked as well
-
got it over a pit today and the oils leaking out the tell tale hole at the bottom of the bell housing  so looks like the gearbox will have to come out before further diagnosing! theres no clutch slip though so clutch may be salvageable
-
don't even think of reuseing an oil contaminated clutch.
it may not be slipping now but they oten develo pclutch judder or just disintergrate at a later date

As Danny said bin the clutch, no point in doing the job twice.

pulled the box out today, turns out a hole has been burst through from the transfer box into the bell housing so new box i suppose!
