When starting the car up from cold it runs ok, but as soon as you rev it or pull away it starts to hunt badly.
After the engine has warmed up it goes away, this is the 1st gti i have owned so not sure what is.
Also the gears are sloppy and crunches into 2nd, and the same from 4th to 3rd.
Could it be the clutch cable has stretched or the clutch is going.
Thankyou for any advice ;D

Maybe a vacuum leak around the inlet manifold, clean out idle stablisation valve. As for the gears, whats the clutch pedal feel like? try checking the oil level in the gearbox, it should just trickle out of the filler plug hole. A good idea would be to drain the gearbox oil and refill with synthetic, this always seems to improve the gear change.

Good advice as always from above, worth a try.
Unfortunately the gearboxes on these cars aren't that strong and you may find your synchromesh has gone on the gears that you mention. :(
Mine crunches into 2nd gear every time until the oil has got warm (worn synchromesh). I will attempt a gearbox rebuild sometime in the future, unfortunately I just don't have the time at the moment.........and Hazel is running out of patience with me and the lack of DIY.
Try 'golfvr6' advice, it may work.

Castrol Syntrax (I think) is the oil to try, you can get it from Halfords for about ?8 a litre, you will need 2 litres. I've tried this stuff with various cars and it always produces a very slick gearchange. Only problem is the gearchange still isn't great until the box has warmed up, but after about 10 mins the gearchange will be smooth as you like! 8)

I might try that with mine.........cheers.

Yep worth a try! It worked really well in my dad's Audi 90 20V quattro 8)

cheers for the info guys 8)

Ta mate......... but you can call me Kirsty ;D
Anyway, got a few bits done today.......
New plugs, dizazycap, rotor arm, clutch cable and air filter.
Tomorrow I'm doing the oil/filter change and the engine oil change...
Gearbox seems pretty darn fine now too....
Now for a(nother) question.... we found a split in part of the induction pipework from the airbox to the inlet manifold which we presumed was causing the hunting and stalling so we siliconed it up (and have a new pieceof pipe on order).... still slight hunting and car stalls if you rev it..
But.... b/f, purely by accident, pulled a small pipe off and the engine smoothed right out and revfved freely with no stalling... it's a small, white, solid pipe that runs into the cabin, under the dash and disappears into the heating system by the looks of it....
Here's a pic of where it was pulled off of.... please tell me what it is and if it's important...

I had the same problem. Changed everything from Idle Stabilisation valve to the warm up valve, Spent a fortune. The problem turned out to be muck in the petrol tank had clogged up the fuel filter. Tank was flushed and filter replaced. It now drives like a new car. Hope it helps

What engine is it?

That looks like your vacuum line to your MFA. I assume that means your MPG won't read correctly.
By pulling that pipe off you have created a vaccuum leak in your induction system and are therefore disguising the real problem. Apart from your MPG not working on your MFA the engine will not be running as efficiently as it could be. I'd reconnect the pipe and do a little more investigating.

What engine is it?
'B' Reg..1.8i 8V K-jetronic (I think that's what it's called..... not the digifant one)
