Title: USB files
Post by: PenguinGTI on 08 February 2011, 19:10
Right this could be quite an easy one to fix but as I'm not a computer whiz I don't know how else to do it.

I put all my music on a USB stick to play through the car's USB port. Ideally I would like it so that all my music comes up with the proper information on the display. Most songs give the right name but some of them still come up "Unknown" or random rubbish.

I've entered the track information on ITunes and I have also renamed all of my files separately but still some of the songs don't display the correct info.

Can anyone help me out and maybe shed some light about where and how I need to name the files for the correct info to come up on the display?

Just in case it's important I have a completely standard music system in my car. I think it's the RCD310 as I didn't tick any upgrades.

 Thanks

Never mind I sorted it.

For those who wish to know you right click the file, select properties, select the "details" tab and you need to change the "title" field.

I don't know if everyone is the same but my car came with an aux in port just under the centre arm rest and also a port of some sort with a USB cable inside the compartment under the centre arm rest

Kenneth - The Mk6 comes with an iPod connector adapter where the output can be a USB point. You should have got this with the car, if not 'scream' at your dealers !
So, same port as iPod connection under the armrest.

Mine came with a lead which plug's inside the armrest. I got given the lead with a USB connection. I politely asked for an IPOD connection lead and was duly given one (a lead that is!).

Good call on the file details info, mine just comes ups with "Aux" on the screen, which is particularly annoying when the IPOD gives you track/album detail.

Can't substantiate this but I believe you can only play USB sticks with up to 2Gig capacity? My boss has a Rocko and he tried plugging his removeable HDD in! Apparently it didn't work.

Yeah I'm the same. I've got the audio jack input just above the handbrake and inside the armrest I have the plug with the USB connector lead. I had a cable at the time to connect my ipod to the audio jack input so I used that method and now I don't have an ipod so it is USB ftw

Yeah the benefit is that I can put all my music on the stick and browse it using the CD player controls and change song through the steering wheel controls.

I don't know about any limitations. I've been using a 4 gb stick for the last while with no problem. I've just ordered a 16 gb stick so if I have any problems I'll put it up here to let others know.

Boys and girls, I wouldn't have thought there weren't any limitations on the USB size......as wouldn't this also apply to the iPods connected through the same port....?

I've a 16gb stick plugged in and it works fine. Thinking about getting a 64gb one...

I'm using a 16gb stick too, no problem at all and imo the easiest and probably cheapest way to do it.

8gb no issues,

the Hard drive may have required some sort of power?

Thankfully its not true.

I occasionally plug in my 500Gb hard drive with no problem.

Here also, 16Gb. Bought it from 7dayshop for about £12 delivered. Then just use mp3 tag & rename to add track and tag data to my MP3's. Works a treat

As for renaming your files you can easily do that on a computer. All my tracks are named Artist - Song title and thats how they show on the screen. You can make a Windows Media Play List the radio will read. MP3's generally have a tag that shows all the details of the artist, song, album etc that info also shows if you press the Info button. I don't know if it read it from the tag or the Play List.

I use a 2GB Kingston flash drive with 270 MP3's on it in 16 folders 3/4 full on my RCD310, you can read the Volkswagen Media Device Interface (MDI) Specifications (http://www.my-gti.com/443), this is a useful site to keep in your favourites.

You can download the lastest Volkswagen Media Device Interface (MDI) Firmware Upgrade 0111 KW22-2010 (http://www.my-gti.com/2491/volkswagen-media-device-interface-mdi-firmware-upgrade-0111-kw22-2010) with came out week 22 2010. I tried this when I had a problem with mine MDI firmware upgrade (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=179186.0).

I also read somewhere that a user updated his firmware to the latest and when he took it into the dealers for something else they must have noticed now he says his warranty is void for doing his own updates. Well they didn't say anything to me.

There's a good, free, program you can download for block renaming and tagging music files called MP3Tag (http://www.mp3tag.de/en/) - I use it for everything I download from 'dubious' sources.
