is it coming out of the cap or the pipe work at the bottom. If its the cap, and its a black one, change it for a blue cap as the old black ones have a common pressure relief problem

couldnt tell by the time i got under the bonnet i was dry. if it were the cap (which is a black one) would i have lost the majority if not all of my coolant?

If the engine gets warm and pressures the system it could certainly lose a fair bit

Just use water if its not far home, once there disconnect the bottom rad hose and you may as well flush the system whilst your at it. Top up as normal, and make sure you shift any air pockets. (lots of threads on here how to do it) Hope all goes well

use 50% coolant (about 2-3litres from memory) from VW when refilling.  Turn the heating on in the cabin whilst bleeding and you shouldn't have a problem.

Yes I believe the blue cap is better.
