Title: Different colour pads?
Post by: bonny on 08 February 2011, 16:06
I was given a DA polisher & a whole load of products inc polishes & different colour pads!!
My question is what colour pads do what job?

Also do polishes & waxes have a shelf life? Thanks

what colour pads have you got and pics would be handy because theres so many variants.

if stored correctly your waxes and polishes should last you quite a while it all depends on there make up really. water based polishes tend to go off quicker than polishes with a higher solvent/oil content

Different manufacturers use different colours for different cut levels, get a picture up if you can and i'm sure one of us will recognise what make they are and be able to help.

First things first, chuck the wonderwheels in the bin!!!!! the dial will be the speed control. Unfortunately thats my load shot! Sorry.

Yeah the dial is definitely the speed dial - start off working the polishes at speed 2 or so, then after 1-2 passes ramp it up a couple of speeds for another couple of passes, then slow it down again once the polish has broken down. (Clear haze). I would be throwing the Polish in the bin, looks knackered to me!

Im sure the pro's will be along soon to help out with the pads

chuck the wonder wheels

pads look fine but wont be if you get grit in them from putting them on the ground, naughty naughty!!

poorboys stuff looks dead so bin those.

and regarding the dial it is a speed dial as said above.

you've got some good waxes there aswell and the klasse stuff pretty good aswell

It looks like the pads are SONUS, so what colour does what?

your polishing to get rid of swirl marks so once paint is swirl free just a couple of coats of sealant and then wax..

have a feel of the pads, the yellow one looks like a stiff ridgid pad and may be an intesive cutting/compounding pad, the green one im not sure about, the orange and blue ones could be a finishing pads and should be really soft and easy to squeeze. the other two purpley ones could of started out white in which case are swirl removing pads.

Just what i was after, thanks  Your right about the feel test.... the yellow ones are stiff (would they be ok for say after flatting a bumper with 800 then 1200 grit paper?) What compound would i use for this method to polish up?
The green, orange & blue pads are very soft to touch, so would these be used to apply sealant & waxes?? Sorry for the noob questions  :undecided:

Thanks again

You could really do with following 1200 with 2500 or 3000, that would make it easier to polish out.

The softer pads can either be used for a finishing polish to bring up the shine, or apply the sealants as you have said.
