My beloved Mk4 GTi has recently started to shake & judder. Its rapidly declined and have had to drive in lower gears to avoid the major shakes...feels very bad with virtually no power or response. :cry:Am taking it to the garage (anyone know a good VW place in east London?) but curious if you knowledgeable people can guess what's wrong. Its done 130K miles, is a bit oil thirsty and unfortunately crawls though alot of London traffic. Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

Which engine do you have?
-
I can almost guarantee it's your MAF Sensor!

Its a 1.8 Turbo. Is a MAF an easily replaceable part? Any ideas on cost of repair?

best with a genuine 1 looking about £90

pretty sure its engine code is AUQ. Excellent info on the MAF Sensor. Very very grateful to know this is fixable without bankrupting myself!

Get it scanned before you waste any money on it

Sounds like the TB has gone and is not aligning properly, get it scanned too see what the faults point too
-
MAF sensors don't bring up any engine lights so sounds like to me.
The chances of the TB not being aligned is slim, unless someone has been playing with it

TB will judder, the potentiometer on mine kept misreading, so it was always aligning, one minute power, next feck all then some camel juddering making me look like a twit that can't drive. I wouldn't rule it out as that does not show up on the dash either. But as said vag-com will straight away pinpoint or show you what the problem is.
Plus varied-warranty cars are renown for having a faulty TB sooner or later
