I would suggest sticking a full tank of vpower in there with a bottle of redex and giving it the italian tune up (not as extreme, but close).

You may find that it'll blow all the cobwebs out and pass

It may be a faulty coolant temp sensor as well.

Also pull out the holder for airbag/abs and check the wires have not been snipped. Previous owner may have done it to hide an abs fault

How much were the emissions over by?
Title: Re: Failed mot :(
Post by: Craiglannon on 08 February 2011, 08:44
Emission were suppose to be 0.3 but there at 6.8 through the roof

I would think you have a lambda or temp sender problem.

Might also be the cat in trouble.

+1 with what wayne said , personly id steer clear of the old redex crap it can cause more problems inside the engine

Post by: rubjonny on 08 February 2011, 10:25
is there definitly a cat in there, i would expect it to be lower than that even with a duff cat. it seems way, way over though my ABF was something like 0.3-0.8 without a cat!

get your fault codes checked, i would suspect faulty ecu temp sensor or lambda.

I didn't know it'd be over by THAT much!

I've always used Redex and it's great! Never caused any problems, car always ran smooth.

I've got a very good dyno curve and hp to prove it

Redex is great! Used it all my cars. Yes its been around a very long time!

I hate it when they wont give you any idea what the problem might be!

Exactly what i was going to say, even without a cat the emissions are way to high.
Check the plugs, they are probably black. I would suspect ecu temp sender or lambda also.
For the record, if emissions are only slightly over, use cataclean, not redex, its much better.

Goni stick it in a garage this weekend it's shuddering abit when drivin at about 30 35 mph hope it's not totally f***ed

There's also defo a cat there had a look earlier
also noticed a ripped hose dnt have a clue what it's for it goes in just above my oil filter and goes to a black box type this at front of engine doesn't seem to be anything in it tho

Here's the figures just to show how bad it is

CO MAX- 0.30% ..8.92%
HC MAX- 200ppm... 270ppm
LAMBDA- 0.97-1.03.. 0.77

if I read that correctly, low lamda, high Hydrocarbens and high CO means its running rich and not fully combusting the fuel - i.e. mixture is wrong, or ignition is weak.  Would go with a coolant temp sensor change first.  Worth checking condition of ignition system (plugs, wires, dizzy cap & arm and sparks) if not serviced recently and replace the air filter if not recently serviced too.

nah - if its 1.8 or gti - VW spec 4 electrode ones - i.e.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Volkswagen-Golf-MK3-4-5-Bosch-Super-Plus-Spark-Plugs-x4-/200561387701?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2eb263e8b5 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Volkswagen-Golf-MK3-4-5-Bosch-Super-Plus-Spark-Plugs-x4-/200561387701?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2eb263e8b5)

a touch more at ~£17 delivered.

Leads, cap and arm - would suggest from GSF - https://secure.gsfcarparts.com/shop/ (https://secure.gsfcarparts.com/shop/)  (under ignition category).  Air filter also from GSF under "filters".

It's a 16v.

But it doesn't matter, the NGK ones I posted are triple electrode. I've always bought NGK plugs both for 8v and 16v and they've always been great.

oh ok - the picture showed single plug ones.  Yeah I used to have NGK's in and they were fine too

it sounds to me its over fueling mines doing that at the minute had that problem before turned out to be some bad wiring that runs along the rocker cover, the heat off the engine had melted them together pulled them apart and taped them up its been fine till now, looks like ill have to splice a bit futher back into the loom

Leads for the 16v are very expensive. Cheapest around are about £50, but leads is something you must not buy cheap, as cheap ones fail earlier and they can cause arching on the cylinder block (as I found out with 8v leads). Magnecor do very good leads but they cost £129 for a set (8mm core)

http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=675 (http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=675)

These cost £50 and they're beru which are a decent make, but as I said, cheap ones can cause lots of trouble.

Starting to hate the car haha

changed the oil and filter and put new plugs and new coolant temp sensor. running smoother and starting much better. not had a chance to put it in for a re mot yet but fingers crossed its sorted noticed as i was changing everything though that the exhaust was covered in black soot on the inside on the tailpipe could this have been an affect from non burnt fuel or is this a different problem

cheers for the help folks

Black soot would suggest it is running rich
