Didnt really know where to ask this as its neither here nor there!
anyways there's no spare wheel in the mk2, so i have no flat floor to speak of in the boot. i just happen to have a sheet of aluminium chequer plate which i can cut to size to produce a false floor, and even fit the carpet on top of it if necessary so it doesnt look too chav.
question is, how to secure it to the floor? it has to be easily removable for the sake of the odds and ends in the wheel well. obviously i dont just want to place it in the boot unsecured otherwise i may face decapitation in an accident! :shocked:

can you attach a hinge on the back edge? either to the floor or the bottom of the back seat?
would it not be easier to put a spare wheel in the well though?

I'm guna be sick. Tread plate-ooh nasty! Why not just use a real thin bit of ply and carpet it?

If you cut it to fit the boot floor it shouldnt move anyway, wrap carpet around the edges to ensure a snug, rattle free fit...

Just check you dimensions first as you may find that a solid sheet cut to size might not actually fit through the space and over the turrets. Personally I do it with some suitable carpet material and then bond a few strips of MDF or ply to the underside so it's flexible.

Dead right, checker plate will suck!
A peice of MDF, painted satin black, and held in place with 3 or 4 Dzus type fasteners, "L" shaped brackets riveted inside the aperture, and MDF would sit on top of them, secured with the fasteners... would make a nice little project, as well as a job done properly...

sell chequre plate to a landrover freack so they can put it on there wing tops, as well as being shiney its heavy and expensive, then use MDF as thom said much better job

MDF it is then! i just had this sheet lying around the garage (too good to bin) so thought i'd put it to good use. as mentioned its heavier than you think for aluminium (i know its aluminium as magnets wont stick to it :rolleyes:) plus MDF will be easier for me to cut
anyway i've made a cardboard template, as mentioned here:

... if cut to the shape of the original carpet it needs flexing to get in, so any floor will need to be aroud 5mm slimmer on each side to allow for the turrets etc.

cheers thom, that sounds like the right idea. would the dzus fasteners lock into any old L shaped brackets then? or is there a special recepticle for them? :embarassed:

if im being picky i could relate you back to the first first, i was going to whack the original carpet on top anyway :rolleyes: :tongue: then use thick foam underneath the ally to prevent it from rattling around. if not i have a huge roll of thin rubber backed carpet in black, time to put it to good use i reckon!

actually, just re-read this, that is a bloody good idea! top marks! :afro:
all i need is some suitable baton and evostick! glue the batons to the carpet and job done, bish bash bosh.

Dzus fasteners come in various different forms, but the principle is the same

The "L' shaped brackets would have a receptacle holes, with the wire scrolls mounted on the underside, the fasteners would then pass through the brackets, and locate on the scrolls, when ordering fasteners, be sure to state the thickness of the material (MDF) that the fastener is to pass through.
