Maybe a 1.4, would be better to add another ?1000 to your budget if you want something better.

I think you will get a early mk3 8v for that if you dont worry to much about mileage if you want my advice get a mk2 16v

I agree, hunt around for a mint mk2. Be prepared to look at a lot of cars  :D

I've just bought a decent MK3 8v for ?2K, after a bit of haggling.
It drives well, i like torque of the 8v engine.  
I had a Mk2 16v, which was a good drive, you had to rev it harder to get the power. Both good cars - the Mk3 feels more solid. Look in autotrader, dont rely on the website, the magazine is more upto-date with its adverts.

i just bought my 97 black gti 8valver for ?1500 on the block with a full vag history sent from the dealer.
