Title: Whiter sidelights and number plate lights
Post by: Jimble on 05 February 2011, 12:27
Adding on to kenny's thread, but he's trying to get some serious answers so don't want to hi-jack it! I've also been thinking about changing the number plate lights to something a bit whiter, but don't particularly like the idea of having to code out bulb warnings etc (until i can afford LED rears that is!) anyway, i've just ordered a pair of Osram cool blue w5w halogen bulbs to replace my sidelights as they currently look very yellow compared to the new Nightbreaker H7's.
Do you think they'd make much difference to the plate lights?
I may also get some for the interior lights if it's worth it, i'm just not a big fan of the white LED look in the headlights.
Any opinions welcome cheers

I love those and need some for my car, question is how do you get those DRLs to come on without the other lights coming on?

I know but all my lights come on together all the time, just thought that was natural.

I guess your car is set like mine was. The DRL are the xenons and rear lights on all the time.
To turn just the side lights on you turn the light switch to the sidelight setting. This switches off the xenons and puts the front sidelights and rear lights on instead. You can turn the DRL that are the xenons+Rear lights off using VAGCOM but then you have no DRL at all.

If the LED's are w5w fitment then they can be used as sidelights etc in the golf but they will often cause a "bulb out" on the dash that will need to be coded out, It's for this reason i'm just going for a whiter halogen replacement.

I have those, the car just turned them off when fitted as no resistors, used them in the puddle lights instead.
I took them out when I sold it.

If anyone wants to try them just drop me a PM and I will post them and then if you like them make me an offer

I can remember the days when fog lights on cars were practically orange and were very effective. These have now become a light yellow and are probably not as effective.
Xenons, it seems are not too effective in fog, but is anything apart from those vile orange fogs?
How does a Golf R driver cope in fog, I wonder? Maybe, just maybe, Halogens are not that bad in the broad scheme of things apart from being a bit yellow and not as bright.
It's good we don't get too much or any heavy fog in the London area.
I hope I am not playing devils advocate.

Thanks

Fault free and easy to fit, although they are a micron larger than the hole they will go in

I'm trying to find 1w, 6000k single LED sidelights at the moment that I think will be brighter but I'm not winning

Aaagggghhhhh!!!!!  finished early today so thought i'd fit my new Osram clear blue sidelight bulbs, offside bulb came out no problem but no matter how hard i tried i could not get the nearside bulb out!! It's rediculously awkward and so stiff and wouldn't budge! I haven't got particularly big hands so thought it'd be a doddle but no! Damn you volkswagen!!
So i've still got baby sick coloured sidelights, am i doing something wrong?

You need to get someone with small hands to help out OR whip the bumper off - it's not that hard then you can remove the headlights for super easy access

I know it sounds major but these day you have to remove the bumper on loads of cars to change the bulbs - ask most MK4 owners

There's bloody condensation inside my headlight now after all the fcukin about with it! Took care not to touch the bulb but i suppose it's with my hands getting warm.
Is this going to be an issue or will it just clear on it's own? It's raining which probably isn't helping!

It's just one of those things mate, just not getting a 100% seal. It will go away once your lights are on but it's still annoying. I have tried hairdryer on it before to remove the moisture inside then getting a better seal but it always came back, that was on my old polo though, not had an issue yet with my Golf.

Finally got round to fitting my new Philips 501 w5w sidelight bulbs today. Took the front bumper off, easy enough! Still couldn't find the bulb holder so I opened the cap to the indicator housing & inside was the sidelight bulb holder (no need for the bumper to come off then!!). :undecided:

Changed the blue coloured factory fitted sidelight bulbs (which give off a yellow tint (compared with the xenon main been lights) with my new Philips 501 w5w bulbs in minutes. However they give off the same yellow light?? Doc which bulbs did you fit??

Im sure he says in the xenon thread in the maintenance section. Iirc its a LED canbus type rather than a bulb.

I can't deactivate mine with the indicator stalk ever since I had the rear LEDs installed. Mr.P had such a problem getting all the lights to work properly. (My car is BW8/9, mike.'s BW7 and they are both slightly different as Mike did not have the problems Mr.P had with mine. I think there were a few changes BW8/9 onwards. Wierd.)

Sorry for the thread revival, pick up mk6 tuesday after 2 mk5's and returning to halogen headlights from xenons. Whats the best combo for the front then?

Nightbreakers and some white 501's for sidelights? Are puddlelights still 501 - prob makes sense to change them as well?

What about number plate lights. I fitted the mk6 led ones to the mk5 and they looked great but didn't think this could be done to mk6 due to canbus check? Its a 59 plate car.

Thanks

You can fit the LED number plate lights by fitting a resistor inline to stop the bulb out warning, these are available from Kufatec as well as ebay etc.

http://www.kufatec.co.uk/shop/index.php/cat/c325_Golf-6---5K.html

You can see from this thread the bulbs i have and they're quite good tbh but your going to be seriously dissapointed coming from xenons!
