Hi,
I have found this wiring diagram that I am guessing the guy who put this DX engine into my camper van came up with. I am having a few issues with the cold start valve and so wanted to see if anyone would mind having a little look at this and seeing if you think it looks all OK.

Really appreciate all the help this forum has given me so far
Thank you

you may get more luck a volkszone mate

cheers Ktuludays,
I posted over there too, usually someone helps me on this forum.
:)

that diagram is correct except the red/black wire to the thermo time switch needs to run to starter motor pin 50 red/black cranking feed, and the black wire from the cold start valve needs to run to the 2nd terminal 50a on the starter motor. you could put them both on the red/black wire really, or both to the 50a terminal on the starter. whichever is easiest for ya

Thanks rj :)
I am not sure he has even stuck to his plan. With regards to your above advice does this diagram which i made showing how the 5th injector and cold start is ACTUALLY installed correct?

Thank you

yeah thats fine, the 2nd terminal on the starter will work ok as long as its labled 50a, which id assume it is. basically this terminal is live when cranking, but it wont crank engine over if you put 12v to it (this is needed becasue later models also have a cold throttle enrichment wire to the 5th injector)

Glad this thread has cropped up as I believe my cold start is not working so I have some info to check the setup with now. However, as i've said before, it doesnt prevent the car from starting, just takes a little longer.

Yea I find all this electrics stuff pretty confusing. I have a haynes manual and looked at rj's guide on how to understand it but still not really sure. I almost need a dummies version like here to get my head around it. I will try and get to grips with electrics I think soon a little more.
With regard to my engine not starting I think its a mixture of low fuel, dirty fuel and a well used small inline filter. I am going to remove it and try adn flush teh fuel tank out.
-
Well I ended up rewiring the entire car as the electrics were so badly butchered... But i've had a few gremlins that RJ has helped me with over the last few months.
I'm still not sure about your engine issues being fuel related... when I saw how much fuel was being sprayed in your vid I didn't think that you'd struggle. if you can see faults that are fuel related like cr@p filter etc then sure, sort them out but I'm still thinking timing or electrical (which I know you're looking into now).
Keep at it mate because you're just like I was (with the electrics), pretty much in the dark to start with but each time you do find a problem and fix it, you remember for next time and eventually you'll know you're way around. Redoing my car has made me understand it so much more than I though it would.
BTW, what makes you suspect the fuel is dirty and how old is it?
-
Well the van has been sat for 7 years in total really! It was running last year but didnt drive and it got left whilst i moved place etc. Nothing done to car but wont start at moment.
I had added a little fuel but to be honest most prob used when ticking it over last year. I disconected the fuel pipe from the tank and only a little ran out so im thinking it needs some fresh. The old filter and the little inline one were absolutely filthy and the colour of the fuel as in my vid is very dark.
I checked timing and its fine, and unchanged from when running a year ago. I have changed the metering head as I had bought a few second hand ones previously. The vid was with the metering flap help fully open. Touch wood it just needs fresh fuel and restrictive inline filter removed. If that doesnt sort it im going to try and source a fuel pressure tester.
I am off for a week on half term soon so will get a nice long chance to nosey about, so no doubt youll see more of be then :)
Cheers

Sounds the same as my situation, engine was out of the car for 6 years.. pretty much forgotten about. :lipsrsealed: I couldn't start mine when it was all back together.. got really pee'd off at one point.. turned out to be knackered wiring and an over complicated faulty alarm system, hence why I stripped it all out.. by the sounds of it you're pulling all sorts of crud from the bottom of your tank.
The fuel filter like the one in this picture......

......needs to stay in place but i'd recommend replacing it and I have no idea why there is a second, small inline one. as you say, loose that, is it even correct for a high pressure system?
Because of my crud in old fuel paranoia I put at least 4-5 cans of fuel in before I stated messing and always keep it topped up while it's not moving to prevent the inside of the tank corroding.
-
Yea I replaced that one on the metering head last year before getting it started, lots of crap ran out when I did so was pleased it at least caught most of it. The small inline one I have no idea, hopefully ridding of it will allow the fuel pump an easier ride.
Problem with the T25 fuel tank is you cant get into it to clean etc so going to try and flush as much crude out as i can and hope (pray) the filter catches most of the crap. Ill let you know how it goes :)

Yeah, get rid of that inline one, take a photo first though as i'm curious.
Not sure what tanks you can get inside of these days, it might be worth removing it and opening the plate for the fuel sender as thats a pretty big hole to get to the inside of it to have a butchers and maybe get some crap out. That's assuming your tank is similar to mine.

Here is the removed gammy pre pump filter.

As you can see a fair amount of red crap seems to have been stopped from entering the rest of the system.
Inside the tank is not as bad as I thought it would be:

But still a few bits of red stuff.
Is removing a filter like this a wise idea ???
-
sorry i didn't realise it was pre pump, i though it was inline in the bay somewhere, perhaps not worth loosing but defo worth replacing.
Not sure what that red cr@p is but I think it would be wise to forget the fuel that's in there, drop the tank out and disconnect everything from it, get rid of that fuel and give the tank a good flushing out with a hose. Keep it somewhere warm and let it dry for a couple of days, make sure it's dry before you refit it and get some fresh fuel in there. :afro:
-
Yea sorry mate it is a inline pump, I meant pre pump filter as in its the one before the pump not the later proper one in the engine bay, my bad lol
I have dropped the tank, good idea about flushing it ill do that tomorrow .
:)
